Sugar Creek Sienna

It’s the dawn of a new era at Sugar Creek Baptist Church. After much planning, praying, and discussion, the church body on August 12 voted to expand the walls into the community and commit to a multi-site church structure. Although the concept of one church in multiple locations might be a new to some, over 5,000 churches in the US are today using this as their way to reach additional members of their community for Christ.

Over 5 years ago, Pastor Mark Hartman felt the need to begin gathering additional information on this concept and traveled with the team leaders to a convention that covered the topic of multi-site. Because the church wasn’t at the point of needing to act on the knowledge they gained, ministry at Sugar Creek continued as usual.

A booming Texas economy in the heat of a down economic market has brought more and more people to Fort Bend county. The congregation has steadily grown and the church leadership began to take note. Studies were done to see exactly how many people the present church campus could hold on a Sunday morning, and armed with that information – Pastor Mark knew that the time to consider moving forward with the thought of multi-site was approaching. The Fight Against Mosquitoes

Recent rain in the area has increased the number of nuisance mosquitoes and raised concern for transmission of West Nile Virus. Though there has been positive-testing mosquito samples, there have been no positive human cases of West Nile Virus reported in Fort Bend County so far this year.

West Nile Virus is a potentially serious illness that spreads when infected mosquitoes bite humans and other animals. Symptoms include high fever, headaches, neck stiffness, nausea, and vomiting. Severe symptoms include unusually intense headaches or confusion. If these symptoms develop seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms will appear 3-14 days after a person has been bitten by an infected mosquito. It is important to note that only 1 in 150 people will develop severe symptoms, and about 80% of people infected will show no symptoms at all. (more…)

Sports participation offers a host of benefits for children, including weight management, social skill development and team-building skills. But there are downsides as well. Every year, millions of young athletes end up in the emergency room or doctor’s office with a sports-related injury.

From sprains and strains to shin splints and Little League elbow, a variety of conditions can bring sports participation to a halt.

Acute injuries occur suddenly, often after a collision or other trauma. Examples include sprains, fractures, torn ligaments, eye injuries, concussions and spinal cord injuries. Contact sports such as football or basketball may spring to mind but baseball players may also suffer acute injuries from high-speed balls, mid-field collisions and improper sliding. (more…)

Sugar Land Families have Sent Out an S.O.S.

The heat wave is not the only cause for concern for area families…parents have expressed the need for help in finding speech therapy services for their kiddos. The biggest headache has proven to be the dreaded 6 MONTH WAITING LIST. More of our little ones need services, but many area clinics just don’t have enough therapists to meet the demand. And this means waiting up to 6 months to begin treatment.

“As a speech-language pathologist and mommy of a child receiving speech therapy services, I understand the importance of receiving care right away. Waiting for treatment can make all the difference in the ability to communicate and succeed academically and socially,” noted Dana Johnson, Vice President of Operations and Speech-Language Pathologist. “So, we just had to do something to help.” Speech Therapy Unlimited, PLLC is offering a helping hand by hiring an impressive family of therapists and also partnering with area agencies to provide speech therapy for all who need it…and best of all, services are being provided without the wait. Alligators have inhabited Texas’ marshes, swamps, rivers, ponds and lakes for many centuries - this includes the Sugar Land area.

They are an important part of Texas’ natural history, as well as an integral component of freshwater ecosystems. As Texas residents expand their homes and businesses, encounters between these normally shy reptiles and people are increasing.

Once endangered, alligators were taken off the endangered species list in 1978; however, they are still protected by law. Alligators are found in 10 different states, and here in Texas, they are found in 120 of 254 counties, including Fort Bend. (more…)

Fort Bend Y Dedicates Earle Family Support

At a recent Fort Bend YMCA board meeting and reception held at the Fort Bend YMCA in Missouri City, current and past YMCA volunteers joined the staff in recognizing Captain and Mrs. Leonard H. Earle for their support of the YMCA. During the ceremony, Eric Schenkelberg, Fort Bend YMCA Group Executive announced that the YMCA was recognizing the Earle Family with a dedication of the new pool covered pavilion and child watch playground shade structure at the Missouri City facility. The improvements were funded through a gift from Mrs. Charlotte Earle and the late Captain Earle, who passed away in 2007. On behalf of the Earle Family, Doug Earle, former Fort Bend Y Executive and son of Captain and Mrs. Earle, accepted a brass dedication plaque that will be displayed at the outdoor pool complex of the YMCA.

Before the official dedication, Gary Nichols, retired Sr. VP of the YMCA of Greater Houston, provided some background on Captain and Mrs. Earle to the crowd. According to Nichols, both Leonard and Charlotte grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia. At the age of 16, Leonard Earle became a seaman in the Merchant Marines. By age 24, Captain Earle obtained his Master Mariner’s License and became the youngest captain in the Standard Oil Fleet. Later in his career, Captain Earle moved his family to Houston, Texas where he held the position of the Port Captain for Houston. Mr. Nichols went on to explain that both Captain and Mrs. Earle were very active volunteers and community supporters and instilled this same trait of Christian service to their three children. Mr. Nichols ended his comments by stating, “The Earle Family have been a blessing to all whose lives they have touched and helping us all to achieve our greatest potential as children of God.” (more…)
