Following the success of Sugar Land’s Smash Bash table tennis tournament, the Imperial Park Recreation Center will celebrate the Year of the Dragon with a follow up tournament called Counter Smash. The public is invited to watch the fun, fast-paced sport or participate in the tournament. The round-robin tournament will consist of eight tables with matches for men’s singles, women’s singles and men’s doubles. During the event, there will be activities for everyone, including iPong, the Game Cube and more. Refreshments will also be available throughout the event. Ribbons will be awarded to all participants. Medals will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd place girls & boys in the mile run in each age division. Age divisions: 4-5 years; 6-7 years; 8-9 years; and 10-11 years. New categories this year are: Alumni — 6th grade up to 14 yrs old and Parents. 1 mile run will be chip timed this year for faster, more accurate results. Lunch will be served after the race at approximately 11:30am in the Santuary. Lunch tickets can also be purchased online and are: $5 for children aged 4-12 years; $10 for adults. and Children aged 3 and younger are free. Kites will fill the sky at the City’s third annual Cultural Kite Festival. Everyone is invited to enjoy the festival and participate in activities such as a miniature kite museum showcasing the diverse history of kite making, kite flying lessons and kite flying competitions. Don’t have a kite? Don’t worry! A kite-making workshop will be onsite for children to build, design and take home their own kites. The kite contest is open to all ages, shapes and sizes! Students in Fort Bend ISD will observe WATCH Week on March 5-9 by taking part in various activities to help them understand the five risk factors (Weight, Activity, Tobacco, Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure) for heart attacks and strokes. FBISD schools are planning numerous activities to engage the students during the week-long observance. Garcia Middle School, for instance, will host its “Curriculum and Wellness Night” on March 1, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm in the school gym. The event will feature educational centers focusing on heart health, tobacco prevention/cessation, diabetes prevention, and drug awareness. Members of the Shape Up Sugar Land Youth Committee will host numerous physical activity stations that will provide activity in jump rope, weight lifting, yoga, as well as a basketball free throw challenge. The exhibit, “In a Nutshell: The Worlds of Maurice Sendak,” will be on display at Fort Bend County Libraries’ in the Bohachevsky Gallery. George Memorial Library is the only library in Texas selected to host this traveling exhibition. Maurice Sendak is best known as the illustrator of more than 100 children’s picture books, including Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen. Illustrations in his works are populated with friends, family, and the sights, sounds and smells of his childhood in New York in the 1930s. Sendak’s imaginative artwork reflects the brilliant mingling of his European background, his American childhood, and his Jewish culture.
