“Hunting for Homes” A Success

On November 5, 2011, the Animal Services Agencies of Fort Bend County held the first countywide pet adoption event. The event was an overwhelming success: all 62 dogs and 28 of the cats found loving homes. The event would not have been possible without the hard work from the staff of Animal Services Agencies of Sugar Land, Rosenberg, Missouri City, Stafford and Fort Bend County. (more…)

2012 Golf for Greater Houston benefits Hope for Three

A Spectacular Snowfest

A slight chill in the air proved the perfect setting for hundreds who turned out for Missouri City’s annual Snowfest celebration at the City Hall complex on Texas Parkway Dec. 9. Participants enjoyed the lighting of a 26-foot holiday tree that also featured a fireworks display over City Hall, rides down the giant Snow Hill, pictures with Santa, carolers and lots of good food. Residents also pitched in to donate unwrapped toys to Santa’s Exchange, a Fort Bend County nonprofit that assists families in need. On Saturday, Dec. 10, the annual Snowfest Parade delighted crowds lining the roadway on Cartwright Road. The two-mile procession featured dancers, high school bands, floats and trailers decked out for the holidays, with Santa making a special appearance at the end of the parade.

A Winning Salute

The “Show Me City” recognized Hightower High School’s football team, the Hurricanes,
for reaching the Class 5A Division I Finals at the City Council meeting held on Tues., Jan. 17. Following a winning regular season, Southlake Carroll came from behind three times to edge Hightower 36-29 in the Class 5A Division I state championship game played in front of nearly 43,000 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on Dec. 17. Aetna Foundation Supports YMCA Program Promoting Youth Health & Wellness

At a recent presentation at the Fort Bend YMCA, it was announced that the YMCA would be a recipient of a $25,000 grant for the YMCA’s After School and Outreach Health Enhancement program. During the presentation, Maria Mendez, Mid-America West Regional Director for Aetna, presented YMCA Group Executive Director, Eric Schenkelberg, with a check for $25,000. “Aetna is proud to be supporting the YMCA in their endeavors to make this community’s youth healthier”, stated Maria Mendez of Aetna. After dozens of community meetings, workshops and final approval of the Imperial redevelopment project by Sugar Land City Council, the master-planned community’s General Manager says now is the time to move forward and “create a community gathering place we can all be proud of.”

Amnesty for Skeeters Pest Control Firm to Present Inaugural Season

ABC Home & Commercial Services, Houston’s premier pest control firm, has been officially named the Presenting Sponsor for the 2012 Inaugural Season of the Sugar Land Skeeters minor league baseball team. As part of the agreement the Skeeters will be granted amnesty from ABC’s mosquito control program.

“To have the area’s leading pest control company grant amnesty for Skeeters and Skeeters’ fans is a giant step,” said Matt O’Brien, President of the Skeeters. “Much to the relief of our mascots, Swatson and Moe, they and the rest of the team will be protected in Sugar Land for years to come.” (more…)

Atlantic League MVP Named Skeeters First Player

The Sugar Land Skeeters have announced that they have signed former Atlantic League MVP Josh Pressley as the organization’s first player. Pressley comes to the Skeeters from the Five-Time Atlantic League Champion Somerset Patriots (N.J.).

“We’re excited to have a player of Pressley’s caliber”, said Gary Gaetti, Manager of the Sugar Land Skeeters. “Josh with his experience and leadership is the kind of guy that we are looking to build our organization around. More than 300 dads and daughters enjoyed a memorable event on Sat., Feb. 11, at Missouri City’s 16th annual Dad & Daughter Dance. The theme for this year’s event was “Princess Ball” and the lovely ladies were treated to an evening fit for a princess, including dinner, dancing and a ride in a horse-drawn, lighted carriage that came with blankets to ward off the evening chill. The pre-Valentine’s Day evening of fun was a special opportunity for the girls to spend a night out with dad. Most dads said the evening was a magical moment that will last a lifetime.

Celebration of a Century

Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen and City Council Members were on hand Dec. 6 to help Doris Johnson celebrate a major milestone – her 100th birthday! The Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels held a party in her honor at the Stafford Congregate Center. Ms. Johnson was born on Dec. 6, 1911 on a farm near Grinnell, Iowa and later moved to another farm near Swan, Iowa, with her eight siblings. She married in 1939 and had a daughter on Dec. 7, 1942. She later worked for Farm Bureau Insurance and retired after 25 years. In 2006, Ms. Johnson relocated to Missouri City. She has three grandsons and seven great grandchildren and attends the Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels at the Stafford Congregate Center each weekday.

Chinese delegation visits Clements High School

Clements High School Navy JROTC Program Visit Classic Chevrolet Owner

On May 9th, two cadets from the Clements High School Navy  JROTC program paid a visit to Don Kerstetter,  owner of Classic Chevrolet in SugarLand.

Cadet Lieutenant Commander  Christopher Mann and Executive Officer  Ed Alexander presented an award as a token of thanks and appreciation to Mr. Kerstetter and his dealership for a donation made earlier in the school year to the Clements NJROTC Unit.  Clements cadets are very active in the community providing manpower for numerous charities including the Alzheimer Association and  The Fort Bend Education Foundation.

Diggin’ In to a Community Volunteer Project

Pigtails and piles of dirt.

That was the scene recently at Missouri City’s Buffalo Run Park, where a local Girl Scout group helped rebuild a special garden—a habitat garden for butterflies.

Girl Scout Brownie Troop 19274 planted flowers and shrubs on Saturday, March 31, to restore the Butterfly Garden left dry from last year’s drought.

The 12 girls, ages 8 and 9, spent much of their morning at the garden, replenishing the vegetation and their friendly bond. (more…)

Eldridge Lake Stocked with Trout

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department stocked Eldridge Lake with 500 rainbow trout on Feb. 1, adding to the bass, catfish and perch fingerlings that have been stocked in the past.  Trout are a cold-water fish that thrive when temperatures drop.

Ellen Kendall Named Marketing Manager for First Colony Mall

Ellen Kendall joins First Colony Mall as the new marketing manager for the property. Ms. Kendall brings more than 15 years of experience to the position, including serving as marketing manager for a 1.5-million square foot super-regional mall in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Her background includes not only experience handling marketing for a shopping center, but also tourism, event planning and involvement in the community, so she is an ideal fit for First Colony Mall,” says Donna Molho, general manager for the shopping center. Enhanced Services Result in Dramatic Recycling Increase in Sugar Land

Early numbers show a dramatic increase in residential recycling after Sugar Land rolled out an enhanced program late last year.
More than 26 percent of waste has been diverted from landfills since the program’s implementation in December — a 160 percent increase over the old program.  In December alone, City residents recycled more than 850 tons of materials, including 388 tons of green waste.

Sugar Land’s curbside recycling program was expanded to include all colors of glass bottles and jars. The addition of a green waste program ensures all green waste — grass clippings, leaves, brush, tree limbs, etc. — will be taken to a composting facility and recycled into mulch or compost rather than sent to a landfill. EXANA APPOINTS NEW BOARD MEMBER

Nina Schaefer was elected to the Texana Board of Trustees in October, 2011 and will represent Fort Bend County.  She is the proud sister of a client of Texana who has intellectual disabilities.  She has served on the board of Richmond State Supported Living Center Volunteer Services Council for a number of years.  Additionally, she has served on boards for many non-profit organizations, in her church, and has been active in community service organizations for many years.  Ms Schaefer graduated from Houston Baptist University with honors in two majors, English and Political Science.  She then graduated from South Texas College of Law and has been practicing law in Ft. Bend County for over 25 years.   Dianne Wilson, Texana Board of Trustees Chair said “Nina will be a great addition to the board and we are all looking forward to having her insight and working with her.”

 

Exchange Club of Sugar Land Youth of the Month

The Exchange Club of Sugar Land recently honored Wesley Yu who is a senior at Kempner High School as Youth of the Month.   Wesley contributes his strong foundation to his parents.  He is an excellent student who excels in academics and has a passion for volunteering.  He believes that hard work and giving back to the community will help him succeed in his life.  Wesley enjoys many community projects but his favorite is helping out at the Exchange Club annual Spaghetti event.  Congratulations Wesley as Exchange Club of SL Youth of the Month. FBISD Administrators joined Fort Bend Medical Society Alliance at “Red Ties & Rubies” WATCH Preview Party

The Fort Bend Medical Society Alliance hosted its “Red Ties & Rubies” WATCH Preview Party on February 3 that welcomed business and communty members for an evening of entertainment and networking to help spread awareness of the roles the Alliance and Fort Bend ISD School Health Advisory Committee play in promoting WATCH Week.

Held annually in March, WATCH Week is devoted to teaching students about the five risk factors (Weight, Activity, Tobacco, Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure) for heart attacks and strokes. The Fort Bend Medical Society Alliance has partnered with FBISD for the past 10 years in promoting the campaign throughout FBISD schools. (more…)

FBISD Student Athletes earn Medals at State Track Meet

Fort Bend ISD had several students win medals at the UIL Track & Field State Meet in Austin.  Twenty-nine athletes representing 10 of our high schools competed in the annual event, and twelve made a trip to the podium for earning first, second or third place in their respective events.

“I am very proud of all of the athletes and how they competed and represented our District at the competition,” said Philip O’Neal, Athletic Director.

FBISD’s Senior Leadership Cohort Addresses Needs of Homeless Veterans

To help increase awareness of the need to address issues affecting our nation’s homeless veterans, Fort Bend ISD’s Senior Leadership Cohort students conducted an outreach project that involved education and community service.

“According to the DeBakey VA Medical Center, 28 percent of the adult homeless population has served our country in the Armed Forces,” said Betty Ann Williams, Senior Leadership Cohort Sponsor. “Unfortunately, this group is often overlooked, even though their needs are great. Many of these brave men and women don’t even possess the basic essentials they need to get through the day.” (more…)

FBISD’s Student Health Advisory Council (SHAC) joins the “As One Foundation” in Promoting Darling Dash Event

FORT BEND ISD – Fort Bend ISD’s Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) members will take part in the Second Annual Darling Dash Memorial 5K Run and 1K Family Run/Walk on Sunday, February 26, from 8:00am to 10:00am, at Sweetwater Country Club (4400 Palm Royale Blvd., Sugar Land). SHAC members will form a team to walk and run in the race and serve as volunteers to help recruit participants.

Runners and walkers of ALL levels are welcome to participate in the Darling Dash. Registration completed online or postmarked by February 15 is $25 for adults (13 years and older) and $10 for youth (12 and younger). The registration fee after February 15 until race day is $30 adult and $15 youth. Post race refreshments will be provided. Awards will be presented to the top two male and female overall time; and to the top three male and female runners in six age categories: 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60-plus. FBJSL and The Fred & Mabel R. Parks Youth Ranch Dedicate New Recreation Center

The Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) and The Fred & Mabel R. Parks Youth Ranch held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, December 3rd, 2011 dedicating the new recreation center made possible by the 2011 FBJSL Charity Ball’s proceeds. Parks Youth Ranch was established to address an identified gap in services for abused, at risk and homeless youth in Fort Bend County. In February 2011 the 90-day emergency youth shelter and counseling center opened and is serving youth between the ages of 13 to 17 years of age. The ranch houses three facilities: The George Counseling Center, a temporary shelter and a new recreation center. Referrals come from Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Juvenile Probation or the community. (more…)

FBJSL and William B. Travis High School Raise Funds for the Cause!

Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) proudly accepted a check from William B. Travis High School athletic trainers in the amount of $800. The League will use the donation from Travis High School and that of other partnering organizations, including Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, to further the community’s fight against breast cancer. FBJSL is working with the American Cancer Society in an ongoing, collaborative effort to provide financial support for programs and services designed to improve quality of life, provide access to early detection and treatment, and diminish suffering for Fort Bend County breast cancer patients. FBJSL Awards $1,000 Grant to Shape Up Sugar Land

The Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) was pleased to award $2,500 Community Assistance Fund (CAF) Grants to Crisis Intervention of Houston, Inc., and Fort Bend Lawyers Care.

Crisis Intervention of Houston, Inc., (CIH) has served more than 2 million people in crisis. Through a collaborative effort, Crisis Intervention of Houston provides residents of Fort Bend County a hotline specific to middle and high school students in the Fort Bend county area and also provides crisis response to those students.  FBJSL funding will be utilized for Suicide Prevention Training for teachers, school administrators, counselors and interested adults and will enable CIH to implement a much needed Survivors of Suicide support group. The Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) is offering two scholarship programs to assist women in Fort Bend County who desire to further their education.

The FBJSL Volunteer Scholarship  – The FBJSL Volunteer Scholarship applicant must be an outstanding Fort Bend female high school senior who has completed at least 100 hours of high school community service, has a minimum GPA of 2.5 and desires to pursue higher education in the 2012-2013 school year. Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) has begun its membership drive for the 2012 – 2013 League year.  Provisional membership is available to women ages 23 and older.  Women interested in learning more about the League are encouraged to attend our annual Bring-A- Friend social at PF Chang’s in Sugar Land on Thursday, May 24th at 6:00 p.m. Two informational meetings will also be held on July 12th and August 7th at a location to be announced.

Along with events such as Charity Ball and Sugar Plum Market, FBJSL members will have the opportunity to provide direct service to the following agencies: Child Advocates of Fort Bend, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry, Fort Bend Community Partners Rainbow Room, Fort Bend County Women’s Center, Fort Bend Seniors, Houston Museum of Natural Science-Sugar Land, Literacy Council of Fort Bend County, Lunches of Love, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land and Fort Bend Teen Service League (FBTSL), a mentoring project of FBJSL. Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) proudly accepted a check from the David Crockett Middle School and Sugar Land Middle School Girls Volleyball teams in the amount of $616, representing the results of the two teams’ fundraising campaign called “VolleyPink Project” to support breast cancer awareness month in October. The League will use the donation from Crocket MS and Sugar Land MS and that of other partnering organizations, including Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, to further the community’s fight against breast cancer. Congratulations to Romy Landeck and Simone Manuel for competing at AT&T Winter Nationals in Atlanta, GA on December 1st - December 3rd.

Congratulations to the 23 swimmers who competed at the Texas Age Group Swimming state meet (TAGS) in The Woodlands on March 9th-12th. The meet was fast and FCST swimmers stepped up to the challenge and had some great racing over the four day meet.

Congratulations to Chris Yeager for achieving his first USA Swimming Sectional time by swimming to a 9th place finish in the 13-14 1000 Free with a time of 9:56.07. Chris’ 1000 Free, as well as his 1650 Free which he placed 8th overall were new USA Swimming AAAA times. In addition, Chris placed 16th in the 500 Free and had 100% best times at the meet. (more…)

Congratulations to the 37 Senior swimmers who traveled to Texas A&M to compete at Gulf Senior Champs on December 2nd – 4th. 

Kaitlyn Swinney qualified for Winter Junior Nationals for the first time with her 400 IM time of 4:57.08L.  This time also qualifies her for Short Course Nationals.  Additionally, Kaitlyn achieved two new NCSA Junior National times in the 200 Back and 200 IM respectively.  Teammate Corey Duke made his first NCSA Junior National time when he swam to a 16:31.92L in the 1500 Free.  Not to be outdone, Kyle Yu broke the FCST team records in the Boys 15-19/Open 200 IM with a time of 2:11.40L.  Kyle also broke the meet record in the Men’s 100 Breast with a time of 1:05.20L.  Breaking the Boys 15-18/Open 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:58.51L were Daniel Graviss, Kyle Yu, Clement Dulac, and Brett Pinfold(more…)

Finance Department Earns Two State Honors for Excellence

In recognition of the City’s excellent fiscal practices and policies, the Missouri City Finance Department has earned two new honors.

The gold Leadership Circle Award from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts salutes the City’s “transparency in financial, audit and budget reporting to residents,” said Finance Director Wes Vela. “We value financial accountability and an important service we provide to citizens is the online posting of the annual budget, annual financial report and check register.” The City Budget features key services and programs; the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report highlights details on the City’s financial condition and the Check Register shows how City funds are spent. First Colony Swim Team Named USA Swimming GOLD Medal Club

USA Swimming released the 2012 Club Excellence results, and FCST has been named a USA Swimming GOLD MEDAL Club! This is the first time FCST has achieved this honor, and FCST is the only Texas team to make the Top 20 this year.

The Club Excellence Program identifies the top 18 & under clubs based strictly on performance. The top 20 clubs are named Gold Medal clubs, the next 80 clubs are named Silver Medal clubs, and the remaining clubs with a Junior National qualifier are named Bronze Medal clubs. Points are based on world rankings, and only swimmers with Long Course Junior National times are eligible. (more…)

First Colony Swim Team was well represented at the 2012 Open Water National Championships

First Colony Swim Team was well represented at the 2012 Open Water National Championships in Fort Myers, Florida on April 27th-29th.  Daniel Graviss led the group with two top 8 finishes, placing 5th in the 5K and 8th in the 10K. This was a large improvement from last year’s 12th place in the 5K and 43rd place in the 10K. The field included several professional swimmers, World Championship medalists, and 2012 Olympian Alex Meyer.  Graviss’ finish in the 5K has placed him on the USA Swimming National Junior Team for the 2012-2013 year.  This is FCST’s second swimmer in back to back years who has qualified for the National Junior Team.  (more…)

Austin Elementary first grader, Aniyah K., opted out of recess today, deciding to pick up trash instead. After talking with her mom about the importance of giving back, Aniyah decided that skipping recess would be a great way to help her community. While her classmates ran around and reached for the sun while swinging, Aniyah served them. Smiling, Aniyah picked up trampled coke cans and empty Capri sun pouches. She even became frustrated when she’d picked up all the trash in one area – her heart was set on service and I was stunned at her determination.     (more…)

FORT BEND COUNTY CONTINUES TO LEAD U.S. EMPLOYMENT GROWTH

For more than two decades, Fort Bend County has accrued national accolades for economic development, job growth and quality of life. Newly released data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) continues the trend, reporting that Fort Bend County ranks eighth for employment growth out of the 323 largest counties in the United States for the third quarter of 2011.

Fort Bend County, located in southeast Texas and part of the ten-county Greater Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), is forecast to continue to lead the region in job creation, averaging more than 3% growth per year through 2015. The projection from Woods & Poole Economics is complemented by data from The Brookings Institution, which earlier this year named the Houston MSA as North America’s fastest growing metro area. Fort Bend County Juvenile Probation Office Awarded TJJD Prevention Grant

The Fort Bend County Juvenile Probation Office has been awarded a $64,258 grant by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) as part of TJJD’s Prevention and Early Intervention Initiative, which is providing demonstration grant funding for programs and services across Texas that prevent or intervene in at-risk juvenile behaviors leading to delinquency, truancy, dropping out of school, or referral to the juvenile justice system.

Under the direction of Chief Juvenile Probation Officer Michael Meade, the department has implemented the “Saved by the Bell”  truancy/delinquency reduction program that has been in effect as a pilot program from 2008 until 2011, serving six schools within the Fort Bend ISD.  In December 2011 the department expanded Saved by the Bell to include a specialized truancy magistrate and enough juvenile probation officers to facilitate all of the Fort Bend ISD.  This grant will add an additional Saved by the Bell juvenile probation officer to administer the same proactive case management strategies together with meaningful sanctions to other school districts within Fort Bend County. Fort Bend County Libraries is saving county taxpayers’ money by using email and telephone notifications rather than mailing out letters. Patrons may receive notices by email, telephone, or text message about books they have requested or that are overdue. By sending out notices electronically, the library saves money on the costs of paper, printing and postage, which helps preserve the environment as well.

Library patrons can manage their online library account by clicking on “My Account” on the library’s webpage. To verify or add a telephone or email account to the record, simply go to “Contact Information and Preferences,” then “Preference for receiving library notices,” and select “email address,” “telephone,” or “TXT messaging” from the drop-down list to choose the format by which library information notices should be received. Patrons who opt to receive text messages will need to ensure that their cell phone number is included on their library record and indicate which cell phone provider they use by selecting a choice from the drop-down menu. Standard text-messaging rates apply, based on the patron’s cell-phone plan.             (more…)

Fort Bend County Partnership Enhances SWAT Response

Fort Bend County’s new tactical, armored response and rescue vehicle is expected to enhance the safety of SWAT officers throughout the region.

Known simply as the Bearcat, the newly realigned Fort Bend Regional SWAT Team will utilize the vehicle for deployments throughout the county.

The Bearcat, which carries up to 10 people, can traverse a variety of terrains. The vehicle has been utilized by police for barricaded situations, high-risk warrants, active shooters, dignitary transport and more. (more…)

Fort Bend Family Health Center Welcomes First Patients

After 7 months of renovation, Fort Bend Family Health Center (FBFHC) reopened the doors of its flagship Richmond Center. Patients were welcomed into the newly remolded facility that now features stone and tile interiors, cutting-edge equipment, and comfortable waiting areas and exam rooms.

During the renovation process, FBFHC patients continued to receive quality services in mobile buildings across the street from the 400 Austin Street location. Many patients stayed with Fort Bend Family Health Center during the transition because they liked the care they received. “I’ve been going to Fort Bend Family Health Center for 5 years because of Dr. Robertson. Fort Bend ISD Names 2012-2013 District Teachers of the Year

Fort Bend ISD congratulates Cindy Cormier of Schiff Elementary School, who was named FBISD Elementary Teacher of the Year, and Nancy Trunk of Clements High School, who was named FBISD Secondary Teacher of the Year at a special awards dinner on May 4.

Cindy Cormier is a fifth-grade teacher at Schiff Elementary. She has been teaching for 16 years, with four of those at Schiff. Cindy was influenced greatly by her supportive parents and by wonderful teachers and professors during her education. She believes her most significant contribution as a teacher is to the individual growth of each of her students. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Studies from Jackson State University, her Master of Education in Elementary Education from the University of St. Thomas, and is currently working on her Doctorate in Urban Education from Texas A&M University. On Saturday, November 12th, Fort Bend Teen Service League (FBTSL) members gathered at Sugar Land Memorial Park for the annual Keep Sugar Land Beautiful “Trees Across Sugar Land” event. The girls assisted at the event by handing out event t-shirts to volunteers upon their arrival at the site. The teens then worked together to plant numerous seedlings along the gravel running path at the park. The Teen League members enjoyed volunteering for Keep Sugar Land Beautiful, knowing the work they do not only improves the aesthetic of the community, but also preserves its beauty for years to come. Fort Bend Women’s Shelter Benefits from Car Show at Otto’s BBQ & Hamburgers

The Fort Bend Women’s Shelter will be the recipient of a $1,300 donation from the Houston Chevelle Club. The money was raised at the club’s second annual car show, Ribs and Rides, held on Saturday, March 24th at Otto’s BBQ and Hamburgers in the Fountains shopping center. More than 70 vehicles were on display from the early 1900s to modern day muscle cars. While the majority of cars were from the 1960s and 1970s, there was something for every car enthusiast.

“The Shelter is the only resource in Fort Bend County for abused women and children who have nowhere else to turn,” stated Eric Christie, Houston Chevelle Club president. “While car owners like to show off their cars, it’s always more special when we can give back to the community. We hope the donation will help the Shelter expand their programs and services in assisting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children.” (more…)

Foster High Student Earns Summer Internship with U.S. Surgeon General’s Ofice

Foster High student in running to be next American Idol

Has anyone looked familiar on recent episodes of American Idol? Maybe someone singing in Galveston and advancing to the next round of competition in California? Then maybe you know Foster High School student Arielle Degueure.

The Richmond resident has been featured in a few snippets of the program as it airs footage from the early audition process. She originally auditioned in August with a cast of thousands in Houston. From there, she was one of only about 250 that were asked to audition again in Galveston.

The Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC), one of the largest Girl Scout Councils in the U.S., received a $10,000 check from the Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL). The grant will help make the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) available to girls living in underserved areas of Fort Bend County, including those who attend schools located in Fort Bend and Lamar Consolidated ISDs, as part of the Council’s Girl Scouts on the Go Program. Grand Opening of Telfair Central starts this weekend

Great American Cleanup

The “Show Me City’” is looking for some dedicated civic groups, community leaders and volunteers for this year’s “Great American Cleanup” as part of our City’s efforts to maintain our designation as one of the best places to live in the United States. The City is partnering with Missouri City Green for this event on Sat., April 28.

Registration/check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. atBuffaloRunPark, Pavilion #1, 1122 Buffalo Run Blvd. T-shirts, gloves and garbage bags will be provided to all participants. A breakfast will also be served to all the volunteers. The cleanup will take place from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at several parks across the City, with closing ceremonies and awards being presented from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. atBuffaloRunPark, Pavilion #1. Harman Center Honors Sugar Land’s First Mayor

Sugar Land City Council named the Senior Adult and Community Center after the City’s first mayor.

The T.E. Harman Center, 226 Matlage Way, is being reconstructed to accommodate senior programs in addition to activities previously offered at the Community Center.

Harman was elected the first mayor of Sugar Land in 1959 and served until 1961.  He served a second term as mayor from 1965 to 1967. (more…)

The first ever baseball game to be played at Constellation Field will feature two Sugar Land High School teams, Fort Bend Independent School District’s William P. Clements High School and John Foster Dulles High School, on Saturday, April 21.

Himesh Gandhi files for Sugar Land City Council

As filing for local city races opened on February 6th, Himesh Gandhi was on the steps of City Hall to make official his run for Sugar Land City Council, At-Large Position 1.

Filing makes the campaign official but Gandhi has been working hard for some time to gain broad citizen support.  The Gandhi campaign recently held a heavily attended kick-off rally at the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, with many elected officials, past and present, and community members in attendance.

“This is an exciting time to live in Sugar Land, one of the premier cities in Texas.  We are on the threshold of a new era of expanded growth and success as exciting as any we have seen in the past two decades. I am passionate about contributing to the prosperity of Sugar Land. As a member of the Sugar Land community for over twenty years, I have witnessed firsthand our City’s ongoing success, due in large to the careful planning, expertise and wisdom of city leaders,” says Gandhi.

As the next At-Large Councilman, Gandhi will focus on strategically moving Sugar Land forward through financial accountability, quality development and an emphasis on city services and public safety. As a partner in a Sugar Land law firm, Gandhi has a solid legal background and extensive business experience in Sugar Land and Fort Bend County. He has been an active participant in Sugar Land government, serving as a member of many committees. Currently, Gandhi serves on the Sugar Land Planning and Zoning Commission and was a member of the recent Redistricting Committee.  He has also served on the Sugar Land 4B Corporation for economic development and on the Building Standards Commission.

In addition to his community service for the City of Sugar Land, Gandhi is a graduate of several Sugar Land citizen awareness programs including Sugar Land 101, the Sugar Land Citizens Fire Academy, and the Sugar Land Citizens Police Academy. (more…)

HISTORY IN THE MAKING AT CONSTELLATION FIELD

History will be made this spring when the Sugar Land Skeeters launch their inaugural season, bringing minor league baseball to Fort Bend County.  To mark this epic event, a Grand Opening Gala entitled “History in the Making” will be held at Constellation Field on Saturday, April 14, 2012.  This very special, one-time event benefitting the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation and Skeeters Youth Foundation will usher in a new era of Sugar Land history in style.  Wearing black tie or vintage jerseys, one thousand guests will be treated to a first look at the newly completed $35 million Constellation Field, located at the intersection of Highway 6 and US Highway 90A, one week before Opening Day.

Gala guests will become a part of Sugar Land history as the very first to step onto the field for commemorative photos, specialty cocktails, dinner, live orchestra, and fireworks.  Local personality and KPRC Local 2 Sports Director, Randy McIlvoy, will serve as Master of Ceremonies and Fort Bend County Commissioner James Patterson will present historic, one-of-a-kind items for auction. HOPE FOR THREE PRESENTS FIRST SCHOLARSHIP TO TEXANA CENTER CLIENT

Hope for Three awarded its very first scholarship to Matthew G., age 7 years, a Texana Center client who has autism spectrum disorder. Because of this grant Matthew will be receiving in-home Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services for six months.  The grant will pay in-home therapists who will work with Matthew weekly to do assessments, ongoing treatment and program development and staff training by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

Kate Johnson-Patagoc, Director of Texana’s Specialized Children’s Services commented “We are thrilled that Hope for Three was able to help Matthew and his family with this scholarship. Intensive ABA is the most proven effective treatment for autism. Unfortunately this can be expensive in the short term and out of reach for some families, but the payoff in the child’s progress is huge! Texana Center could not be more pleased that Hope for Three is able to help children this way”.          (more…)

May 2, 2012  Texana Center received two gifts from Hope for Three, the ‘Path of Hope’  which gives Texana’s autism programs a pretty and practical play area for the children and also a check for $1,000 as seed money to start a scholarship fund for families of children with autism attending Texana for applied behavior analysis treatment.

Thanks to the generosity of Monty and Shye Harris of H & H Curb Company and Dean Eddleblute with Campbell Concrete & Materials who donated the materials and their time to install a new walkway and the bricks and paving stones that make up the “Path of Hope”, this means that Hope for Three will be able to use the funds collected, from the sale of bricks and paving stones, for scholarships. Huggins Family Gift Puts Fort Bend YMCA Campaign Over The Top

Thanks to one of the largest individual donation’s made in the history of the Fort Bend YMCA’s Partners Campaign, the YMCA’s 2012 campaign goal has been met and exceeded.   In a recent visit with Bo Huggins, Houston Distributing President/CEO, Mr. Huggins announced that he and his wife, Amy, and their family would be pledging $50,000 to the 2012 Fort Bend YMCA Partners Campaign.  Mr. and Mrs. Huggins specifically requested that the funds be used to support the Fort Bend YMCA’s outreach programming in Four Corners and Fresno, Texas.  “Bo and Amy Huggins are one of the most generous individuals that I have had the pleasure of knowing and they are passionate about making sure that their kids understand the need to give back to the community as well,” stated Mike Flory, YMCA Board Member.    (more…)

Hunters Glen stores Band Instruments thanks to Home Depot

Employees of Home Depot in Missouri City recently volunteered their time and supplies to help prepare a Band Storage Room at Hunters Glen Elementary School. The Home Depot team constructed and hung shelving units in the room so that the band students can have a designated area to store their instruments instead of carrying them back and forth to class each day.

Innovative Parks Programs Honored by Houston-Galveston Area Council

Several programs initiated by the Missouri City Parks & Recreation Department have been recognized by the Houston-Galveston Area Council as part of the 2011 Parks and Natural Areas Award competition. According to H-GAC, the projects that received awards in four categories serve as models for parks and natural areas in the entire region.

The City’s Three for Trees project was the winner in the “Policy Tools” category. This program helps replenish trees in the City’s parks and on the golf course with proceeds from a discount on three rounds of golf at Quail Valley Golf Course. (more…)

January is National Mentoring Month, and Fort Bend ISD joins school districts across the country in saluting the individuals who serve as mentors in our schools. Mentors support the academic, social and emotional needs of students, while helping to improve students’ self-confidence and attitude to learning.

Fort Bend ISD currently has approximately 180 trained, active mentors who meet with students from all grade levels once a week during the school day. Our mentors are parents, business representatives, and other members of the community and area organizations who are genuinely interested in supporting students.

Registration for the 2012 Texas Summer Reading Club (SRC) will begin on Tuesday,

May 29, and continue through July 28, at all Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) locations. Children from infancy to early teens are invited to come to the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting programs, and join in some fun activities to kick off a great summer!

This year marks the 54th Anniversary of the Texas Summer Reading Club for children. The theme for this year is “Get a Clue… at the Library!” Children are encouraged to read as many books as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total number they read or have read to them, or on the total number of hours they spend reading. LIBRARY’S “RESEACH THE RIGHT WAY” SERIES HELPS STUDENTS EXCEL

Fort Bend County Libraries’ University Branch Library, 14010 University Blvd in Sugar Land on the UH campus, will present a special series for students – “Research the Right Way” — in May. This series will help students learn how to identify authoritative resources from the Internet, access journal articles from the library’s databases, and create bibliographies and citations for their research papers.

The first class, “Research the Right Way: Internet Sources,” will take place on Tuesday, May 8, beginning at 10:30 am, in the Computer Lab. Students will learn how to get quality research information online by using the Internet Links that are available on the library’s website. These websites have been selected by librarians, who have determined that the sites contain reliable information. (more…)

Local residents competes in Behavior Analysis Autism Research competition

JoAnna Jones, a Board Certified assistant Behavior Analyst with the Texana Children’s Center for Autism, recently competed in a state-wide Texas Association for Behavior Analysis Autism Research competition.  Ms. Jones, a native of Rosenberg, is completing her masters degree at the University of Houston-Clear Lake in Behavior Analysis.  She is conducting research on evaluating generalization and the role of stimulus control in social skills training. This research focuses on teaching social skills to children with autism.  As one of the three winners of this competition, Ms. Jones received a monetary award and an opportunity to present her research at the state-wide behavior analyst conference in May.

Clements High School student recognized for superior academic achievement by The National Society of High School Scholars

The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) today announced that Clements High School student Roberto Triolo from Sugar Land, TX, has been selected for membership. The Society recognizes top scholars and invites only those students who have achieved academic excellence. The announcement was made by NSHSS Founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the family that established the Nobel Prizes.
