“Hunting for Homes” A Success

On November 5, 2011, the Animal Services Agencies of Fort Bend County held the first countywide pet adoption event. The event was an overwhelming success: all 62 dogs and 28 of the cats found loving homes. The event would not have been possible without the hard work from the staff of Animal Services Agencies of Sugar Land, Rosenberg, Missouri City, Stafford and Fort Bend County. (more…)

Wow! Wonderful! Awesome! Impressive! Those were just a few of the words used to describe Missouri City’s new Recreation and Tennis Center at the facility’s Grand Opening Ribbon-Cutting ceremony held on Saturday, July 14.

The crowd on hand had plenty to do! There were dozens of activities and guests:

*Enjoyed tours of the center conducted by Staff and Parks’ Board Members

*Watched athletes compete in Wheelchair Basketball and a karate competition

Emily Freeman, sixteen year-old cancer survivor and Pediatric Patient Advocate of Texas Children’s Hospital, is a resilient young lady with a heartwarming success story. She recently recorded a song of hope for Texas Children’s Purple Songs Can Fly project at their new ZapBoomBang recording studio in Houston. Emily, along with the other young survivors who recorded the song, is hoping the song will go viral - bringing a sense of hope and awareness to children with cancer. (more…)

27th Annual Event Presented by the Rose-Rich Auto Mile, Hosted by Houstonian

In its sixth year under the banner of the Rose-Rich Auto Mile, the Central Fort Bend Chamber Alliance’s Annual Golf Classic teed off for the 27th time on May 21.

The Chamber fundraiser, which was hosted by the Houstonian Golf & Country Club, proved, yet again, that it is one of the county’s most popular tournaments, fielding 32 teams of four. The Rosenberg-Richmond Auto Mile, which has agreed to present the tournament again in 2013, is comprised of Finnegan Auto Group, Fort Bend Toyota, Gillman Honda and Legacy Ford. (more…)

2012 Fort Bend ISD High School Football Season Tickets go on Sale in August

Existing ticket holders may renew their seats starting August 6; all others, beginning August 20.

Season football tickets for Austin, Bush, Clements, Dulles, Elkins, Hightower, Kempner, Marshall, Ridge Point, Travis and Willowridge High Schools will be issued in the form of a pass for each seat. The pass will be retained by the purchaser for the season and will be good at Mercer or Hall Stadiums for all Home and Visitor games for that school. As before, the season pass will entitle you to your assigned seat at HOME games. When you are a VISITOR, the pass will act as GENERAL ADMISSION to the game, with no assigned seating. After season ticket sales are over, the remaining chair back seats will be available on a “first come, first served” basis. All tickets sold during the football season will be GENERAL ADMISSION tickets. Tickets sold at our stadiums will cost $8.00 each. For the 2012 Football season, parking will be free of charge.

  • Tickets will be sold at the FBISD Athletic Office in Wheeler Field House, 16403 Lexington Blvd., from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.
  • August 6 through August 17, only 2011 season ticket holders may purchase the seats held in 2011. If you plan to be out of town during this time, your tickets can be purchased by mail. Please mail us a check for the specified amount payable to Fort Bend I.S.D. and include a self addressed, stamped envelope to enable us to return your tickets to you. (more…)

This year’s event, presented by Chevron, features 80’s stud Rick Springfield. Music Fest will be held on Saturday, October 6th at the Stafford Centre at 8 p.m. The Pre-Event Sponsor Party kicks off at 6:30 p.m.

Remember these songs by Rick Springfield - “Life in a Northern Town”, “I’m Not in Love” or “Jessie’s Girl”? They could be heard blasting from every roller rink, boombox and 8-track in town. In fine Music Fest tradition, Springfield is sure to keep everyone on their feet!

Residents, supporters, community leaders and elected officials recently joined voices withMissouri City’s men and women in blue to salute the bravery of officers who have paid the ultimate price to protect citizens nationwide.

The 7th Annual Police Officer Memorial Ceremony began with an “Amazing Grace” bagpipe serenade by David Miller of St. Thomas Episcopal School, the presentation of colors by the Police Honor Guard, a touching performance of the “National Anthem” by Ridge Point High School student Brianna James, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the invocation by Pastor Charles Murphy, who asked guests to “keep these officers and their families in your prayers.” Old Glory waved above the crowd, jointly hoisted high byMissouri City and Stafford Fire trucks. A Spectacular Snowfest

A slight chill in the air proved the perfect setting for hundreds who turned out for Missouri City’s annual Snowfest celebration at the City Hall complex on Texas Parkway Dec. 9. Participants enjoyed the lighting of a 26-foot holiday tree that also featured a fireworks display over City Hall, rides down the giant Snow Hill, pictures with Santa, carolers and lots of good food. Residents also pitched in to donate unwrapped toys to Santa’s Exchange, a Fort Bend County nonprofit that assists families in need. On Saturday, Dec. 10, the annual Snowfest Parade delighted crowds lining the roadway on Cartwright Road. The two-mile procession featured dancers, high school bands, floats and trailers decked out for the holidays, with Santa making a special appearance at the end of the parade.

The “Show Me City” recognized Hightower High School’s football team, the Hurricanes,
for reaching the Class 5A Division I Finals at the City Council meeting held on Tues., Jan. 17. Following a winning regular season, Southlake Carroll came from behind three times to edge Hightower 36-29 in the Class 5A Division I state championship game played in front of nearly 43,000 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on Dec. 17. Aetna Foundation Supports YMCA Program

At a recent presentation at the Fort Bend YMCA, it was announced that the YMCA would be a recipient of a $25,000 grant for the YMCA’s After School and Outreach Health Enhancement program. During the presentation, Maria Mendez, Mid-America West Regional Director for Aetna, presented YMCA Group Executive Director, Eric Schenkelberg, with a check for $25,000. “Aetna is proud to be supporting the YMCA in their endeavors to make this community’s youth healthier,” stated Maria Mendez of Aetna.

Agreement Approved for Future Concert/Performing Arts Venue in Sugar Land

The Sugar Land Development Corporation and Sugar Land City Council approved on Aug. 7 a Letter of Intent with ACE Sugar Land, LLC, for the development of a future concert and performing arts facility.

The agreement defines the terms of a public/private partnership for a 6,500-seat concert and performing arts facility in Sugar Land. The venue’s proposed location is a 21-acre site near the intersection of U.S. Highway 59 and University Boulevard, an area that will include a larger mixed-use development within an area of Telfair identified for commercial, office and entertainment purposes. No time line has been set for completion of the project.

The Letter of Intent establishes funding to begin programming and schematic design, with a focus on creating a signature facility that will be financially feasible and operationally self-sustainable. (more…)

ALBERTO GONZALES NAMED EXCHANGITE OF THE YEAR

At the Installation Celebration of the Exchange Club of Rosenberg, outgoing President, Barrett Briggs announced Alberto Gonzales, as the first-ever recipient of the “Exchangite of the Year Award’ - in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Exchange Club of Rosenberg.

Alberto Gonzales joined the club as a Charter member when it was being formed last May. He has volunteered for almost every project that the club undertook including; handing out flags at the Fort Bend County Fair, National Adoption Day, Parks Youth Ranch Food Drive, National Adoption Day, Toys for Tots and the Houston Rodeo Parade when he led the parade with the banner of the Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast District Exchange Clubs while the members from clubs all over the district handed out American flags. Amnesty for Skeeters Pest Control Firm to Present Inaugural Season

ABC Home & Commercial Services, Houston’s premier pest control firm, has been officially named the Presenting Sponsor for the 2012 Inaugural Season of the Sugar Land Skeeters minor league baseball team. As part of the agreement the Skeeters will be granted amnesty from ABC’s mosquito control program.

ANDREA HARROW JOINS THE WOMAN’S HOSPITAL OF TEXAS AS CHIEF NURSING OFFICER

HCA affiliated The Woman’s Hospital of Texas Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Linda Russell announced that 47-year-old Andrea Harrow, MSN, RN, has been promoted to the hospital’s Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). Harrow comes to The Woman’s Hospital from HCA affiliated West Houston Medical Center where she served as CNO and has functioned in several other leadership roles including Vice-President and CNO of Nursing at Valley Baptist Medical Center, Director of Accreditation and Professional Practice at Memorial Hermann Hospital, and Director of Performance Improvement/ Risk Management at Cleveland Regional Medical.

“I am looking forward to joining the team at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas,” Harrow said. “It is a privilege to serve the women and infants of this community especially during a time when they are most vulnerable and when clinical expertise and compassion can make all the difference.”

“Andrea’s reputation for clinical expertise and leadership precede her,” said Linda Russell. “This is a vital role that we are confident Andrea will fill with her extensive clinical and managerial experience. Her role will continue the more than 35-year quality care and outcomes reputation of The Woman’s Hospital of Texas.”

While she served as CNO for West Houston Medical Center she was responsible for all inpatient nursing departments and directly supervised the Quality Department. Also under Harrow’s leadership, the hospital was recently named by The Joint Commission as one of the top performing hospitals in using evidence-based care processes to improve patient outcomes. Under her leadership West Houston Medical Center was also designated as a Pathway to Excellence® organization by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) demonstrating a commitment to creating a work environment where nurses can flourish and improve not only nurse satisfaction but also patient satisfaction and quality of care.

Harrow holds a Master of Science Degree in Nursing (MSN) from the University of Texas Health Science Center. She is a certified green belt in Six Sigma, a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, Texas Organization of Nurse Executives and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Harrow transitioned into her new role in June succeeding 54-year-old Molly McComas, who announced this year that she would retire. McComas served as the Chief Nursing Officer for The Woman’s Hospital of Texas for the past 18 years.

Atlantic League MVP Named Skeeters First Player

The Sugar Land Skeeters have announced that they have signed former Atlantic League MVP Josh Pressley as the organization’s first player. Pressley comes to the Skeeters from the Five-Time Atlantic League Champion Somerset Patriots (N.J.).

Attendance at Constellation Field Sets Record, Gaines National Prominence

Sugar Land’s Constellation Field is expected to easily surpass the City’s conservative revenue projections as sellout crowds contribute to Atlantic League attendance records.

Funded with a portion of sales tax revenues that may only be used for economic development purposes, the $36 million 7,500-seat stadium is a year-round community amenity that will include baseball, concerts, community events and more. Austin High School’s FFA Students Fare Well at Summer Competition

Sixteen Austin High School FFA students competed in the Austin and Travis Extravaganza 2012 and earned multiple awards in various divisions of competition. The event was held July 20 at the Fort Bend County Fair Grounds as a fundraiser to support the FFA programs at Austin and Travis High Schools. The progress show also gave students who are raising animals the opportunity to showcase their livestock entries that are being developed for the Fort Bend County Fair. Earning awards were:

Sports participation offers a host of benefits for children, including weight management, social skill development and team-building skills. But there are downsides as well. Every year, millions of young athletes end up in the emergency room or doctor’s office with a sports-related injury.

From sprains and strains to shin splints and Little League elbow, a variety of conditions can bring sports participation to a halt.

Acute injuries occur suddenly, often after a collision or other trauma. Examples include sprains, fractures, torn ligaments, eye injuries, concussions and spinal cord injuries. Contact sports such as football or basketball may spring to mind but baseball players may also suffer acute injuries from high-speed balls, mid-field collisions and improper sliding. (more…)

More than 300 dads and daughters enjoyed a memorable event on Sat., Feb. 11, at Missouri City’s 16th annual Dad & Daughter Dance. The theme for this year’s event was “Princess Ball” and the lovely ladies were treated to an evening fit for a princess, including dinner, dancing and a ride in a horse-drawn, lighted carriage that came with blankets to ward off the evening chill. The pre-Valentine’s Day evening of fun was a special opportunity for the girls to spend a night out with dad. Most dads said the evening was a magical moment that will last a lifetime.

Amateur and professional photographers are invited to submit their favorite photos of Sugar Land for the city’s 2013 calendar, the “Best of Sugar Land & Cultural Arts.”

Photographs should reflect the City’s cultural arts while also showing the vibrant community life and diversity that make Sugar Land such a unique and outstanding city, from its people to its beautiful parks, schools, businesses and neighborhoods. The submission deadline is Oct. 26. Submitted photos will also be considered for the City’s website and other City publications.

Catwalk on City Walk Raises Money for Local Charity

Sugar Land Town Square recently hosted its 3rd Annual Catwalk on City Walk fashion show at the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square. This year’s show raised more than $4,000 for Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Pretty in Pink Cancer Fund. This local organization assists patients in the Fort Bend community with the personal costs associated with cancer treatment.

The evening included a pre-show reception with light hors d’oeuvres provided by Whole Foods Market Sugar Land. The 45-minute runway show featured fashions by Sugar Land Town Square retailers with hair and makeup by An Albert Luiz Salon & Spa. After the show, guests enjoyed a champagne toast and cupcakes from The Sweet Boutique. (more…)

Celebration of a Century

Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen and City Council Members were on hand Dec. 6 to help Doris Johnson celebrate a major milestone – her 100th birthday! The Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels held a party in her honor at the Stafford Congregate Center. Ms. Johnson was born on Dec. 6, 1911 on a farm near Grinnell, Iowa and later moved to another farm near Swan, Iowa, with her eight siblings. She married in 1939 and had a daughter on Dec. 7, 1942. She later worked for Farm Bureau Insurance and retired after 25 years. In 2006, Ms. Johnson relocated to Missouri City. She has three grandsons and seven great grandchildren and attends the Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels at the Stafford Congregate Center each weekday.

Christmas Trees May be Left Curbside for Recycling

Sugar Land residents may recycle their live Christmas trees by placing them curbside on their green waste service day.

Christmas trees that are free of all ornaments, tinsel, trimmings, metal tree stands and plastic tree sacks can be recycled. Flocked trees cannot be recycled and must be disposed of on a resident’s bulky waste day. Bulky waste is for items too large to fit in the garbage cart and does not include construction, demolition or hazardous wastes.

Citizen Filmmaker Video Contest winners named at Sartartia Middle School

Sartartia Middle School was named first-place winner of the Citizen Filmmaker Video Contest, sponsored by the SWAMP (Southwest Alternative Media Project). SWAMP launched the contest in honor of its 35th anniversary. Contestants were given a week to create a two-minute video using a camera attached to a mobile device of their choosing, and upload it to YouTube or Vimeo. The following week, the world got to vote for the videos they liked best.

Eighth-grade students in Chris Spisak’s media production class created a video titled, “Why Should YOU Support Young Artists?” which was shot entirely on the iPhone 4S. The video received the most LIKES (738) on its School Tube page and was named winner of the contest. Citizens Citywide Celebrate 29th Annual National Night Out

Neighborhoods across Missouri Cityshowed their community spirit with National Night Out block parties featuring good food, fellowship and fun on the 29th annual observance of the crime prevention initiative on Oct. 2.

The events are designed to encourage neighbors to get to know each other and partner with police officers, firefighters, City Council and staff to prevent crime.

A brief downpour during the start of Creekmont’s annual gathering didn’t put a damper on spirits of homeowners who attended their annual celebration at the community clubhouse. The event featured vendors including the Wells Fargo Wagon, Aaron Rentals, Luby’s catering and Target. Residents signed in and received tickets for special prizes that were awarded throughout the evening.

Diane Singleton has lived in Creekmont for three years. A native ofAustin, she “loves the community” and describes it as “very safe, diverse, and everything you could want.” (more…)

Clements High School NJROTC Cadets are proud to partner with Wreaths Across America (WAA) Houston for the 2nd year in a row. WAA-Houston strives to “Remember , Honor, & Teach” by laying a wreath on each gravesite at the Houston National Cemetery on December 15, 2012. The Clements cadets will be selling the wreaths at the Sweetwater Kroger and Walmart Sugar Land stores on the weekends of October 13th & 14th, 20th & 21st, and November 10th and 11th (Veterans Day Weekend). Their goal is to sell 1,000 wreaths and raise $5,000 for their unit. There are currently 109 cadets in the Navy JROTC program at Clements.

On May 9th, two cadets from the Clements High School Navy JROTC program paid a visit to Don Kerstetter, owner of Classic Chevrolet in SugarLand.

Cadet Lieutenant Commander Christopher Mann and Executive Officer Ed Alexander presented an award as a token of thanks and appreciation to Mr. Kerstetter and his dealership for a donation made earlier in the school year to the Clements NJROTC Unit. Clements cadets are very active in the community providing manpower for numerous charities including the Alzheimer Association and The Fort Bend Education Foundation.

Saluting an unprecedented level of cooperation among 40 government and private sector groups, City officials and guests recently toasted the inaugural opening ofMissouri City’s new $50 million Regional Water Treatment Plant.

Partners of the project raised their glasses—filled with water processed at the facility—to mark a special milestone that has been reached for reducing groundwater usage and in honor of the successful teamwork that produced the largest capital improvement project ever undertaken by the “Show Me City”.

About 100 stakeholders, elected officials and residents sampled H₂O from the treatment plant. The “pure water” was also savored in many flavors such as lemon-lime, strawberry, orange and pomegranate. And, guests enjoyed tasty delicacies while they viewed a slideshow highlighting the timeline for the five-year completion of the plant and took guided tours through the state-of-the-art facility. County Wide YMCA Summer Sites Come Together for “Campapolusa”

Recently, the seven YMCA youth outreach summer camp sites across Fort Bend County converged on Mustang Park, Fresno, TX for their annual mid-summer “Campapolusa” field day and picnic. Over three hundred and fifty Fort Bend County area youth participated in a variety of activities and competitions. “The event is a great way for the kids to experience fellowship, fun and food, as well as building their leadership and teamwork skills,” stated Kem Redic, YMCA Community Outreach Director.

The YMCA “Campapolusa” event was created in 2009 by YMCA volunteers and staff in an effort to broaden the life experiences of the youth in YMCA summer outreach programs and to instill a sense of pride for the community that they represent. During the one day event, participants represent their Y sites through a variety of individual and team competitions. The youth participated In a variety of competitive activities including, running races, sack races, ball games, dunking booth, obstacle course, and talent show. The event day culminated with a barbequed picnic lunch served up by the YMCA volunteers and staff. (more…)

That was the scene recently at Missouri City’s Buffalo Run Park, where a local Girl Scout group helped rebuild a special garden—a habitat garden for butterflies.

Girl Scout Brownie Troop 19274 planted flowers and shrubs on Saturday, March 31, to restore the Butterfly Garden left dry from last year’s drought.

The 12 girls, ages 8 and 9, spent much of their morning at the garden, replenishing the vegetation and their friendly bond. (more…)

Drug “Take Back” Day a Success In Missouri City

A total of 56 pounds of medication has been safely disposed of after a successful “Take Back” day inMissouri City. The Police Department partnered with Drug Enforcement Administration Agents on Saturday, Sept. 29 in the nationwide campaign to properly dispose of unused and unwanted drugs.

“The program aims to promote community awareness of the public health crisis, to combat illegal use of pills and to provide a place for proper disposal of medications,” Capt. Brandon Harris said. “Our goal is to encourage residents to get rid of the drugs and to talk with their families and friends about the dangers of drug abuse.” (more…)

Enhanced Services Result in Dramatic Recycling Increase in Sugar Land

Early numbers show a dramatic increase in residential recycling after Sugar Land rolled out an enhanced program late last year.
More than 26 percent of waste has been diverted from landfills since the program’s implementation in December — a 160 percent increase over the old program. In December alone, City residents recycled more than 850 tons of materials, including 388 tons of green waste.

Sugar Land’s curbside recycling program was expanded to include all colors of glass bottles and jars. The addition of a green waste program ensures all green waste — grass clippings, leaves, brush, tree limbs, etc. — will be taken to a composting facility and recycled into mulch or compost rather than sent to a landfill. It’s been said, “All men will have an enlarged prostate if they live long enough.” Also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, this condition is not cancer and doesn’t raise your risk of prostate cancer, but it can be quite uncomfortable. Fortunately, help is available.

“The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that surrounds the urethra (the tube urine passes through) between the bladder and the penis,” says Lawrence Baum, M.D., board certified urologist on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “As men age, the prostate gland slowly grows bigger and puts pressure on the urethra, which may slow urine flow.” BPH rarely causes symptoms in men younger than 40, but about 50% of men in their 60s and most men in their 70s and 80s have some symptoms. Ms Schaefer graduated from Houston Baptist University with honors in two majors, English and Political Science. She then graduated from South Texas College of Law and has been practicing law in Ft. Bend County for over 25 years. Fall Master Gardener Classes to Begin

The Texas AgriLife Extension Service of Fort Bend County is accepting applications for the fall 2012 Master Gardener Training Class. The 5-week condensed class will begin the morning of Tuesday, October 2, 2012, and will meet each Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through October 30th. Topics range from design planning, diseases, insects, soil, water conservation, tree production/transplanting, perennials and roses, Earth-Kind® practices, and more.

Master Gardeners are members of the local community who want to become volunteer Extension Educators and who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers, and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and help others, and are able to communicate with diverse groups of people. The deadline to register is Friday, September 14, 2012, at 5:00 p.m. Class size is limited. The tuition is $200 per individual and $353 per couple (share a manual). Requirements to attain the rank of a Certified Texas Master Gardener are the successful completion of the 5-week training course and 50 hours of volunteer service through Texas AgriLife Extension Service programs. Family Helps to Branch Out Missouri City’s Memorial Tree Program

A Missouri City couple has flip-flopped the popular money doesn’t grow on trees idiom, putting their dollars at the root of a plan to help cultivate a more affluent tree populous in the city they’ve called home for 23 years.

Tom and Regina “Reggie” Nichols, who live inQuailValley, have generously offered to match the donations ofMissouri Cityresidents who take part in the city’s Memorial Tree Program—a program that for a $100 donation will get a 6-10 foot tree planted in memory of a friend or loved one at one of Missouri City’s parks. The Nicholses have offered to match donations up to 50 trees—or up to $5000.

“We love parks, and the chance to contribute in this way,” the couple, outdoor enthusiasts, said. “We thought if 100 trees, total, could be added to the City through this program, it would be really cool and could really make a difference.” (more…)

Held annually in March, WATCH Week is devoted to teaching students about the five risk factors (Weight, Activity, Tobacco, Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure) for heart attacks and strokes. FBISD’s Senior Leadership Cohort Addresses Needs of Homeless Veterans

“According to the DeBakey VA Medical Center, 28 percent of the adult homeless population has served our country in the Armed Forces,” said Betty Ann Williams, Senior Leadership Cohort Sponsor. “Unfortunately, this group is often overlooked, even though their needs are great. FBISD’s Student Health Advisory Council (SHAC) joins the “As One Foundation” in Promoting Darling Dash Event

FORT BEND ISD - Fort Bend ISD’s Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) members will take part in the Second Annual Darling Dash Memorial 5K Run and 1K Family Run/Walk on Sunday, February 26, from 8:00am to 10:00am, at Sweetwater Country Club (4400 Palm Royale Blvd., Sugar Land). SHAC members will form a team to walk and run in the race and serve as volunteers to help recruit participants.

Runners and walkers of ALL levels are welcome to participate in the Darling Dash. Registration completed online or postmarked by February 15 is $25 for adults (13 years and older) and $10 for youth (12 and younger). The registration fee after February 15 until race day is $30 adult and $15 youth. Post race refreshments will be provided. Awards will be presented to the top two male and female overall time; and to the top three male and female runners in six age categories: 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60-plus. On any given day, volunteers from the Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) can be found across the community, giving their time and talents to benefit the community and helping to raise funds for other community organizations. In early 2010, FBJSL announced its new “Difference in a Day” program, which provides FBJSL volunteers to assist other organizations with one-day projects that help address needs in our community.

FBJSL Accepting Event Beneficiary Applications for the 2013-2014 League Year

The Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) is currently accepting applications from charitable organizations interested in benefiting from an FBJSL event to be held in 2013 – 2014. Event Beneficiary applications must be received by the FBJSL Beneficiary Review Committee on or before January 4, 2013. The Event Beneficiary application and accompanying instructions can be found on FBJSL’s website, www.fbjsl.com. All applications must be submitted via email to [email protected].

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must have 501(c)(3) status and provide services within Fort Bend County. FBJSL selects beneficiaries that demonstrate a history of support within their own organizations, match the League’s vision for Fort Bend County and encompass one or more of the League’s position statements.

Since its inception in 2001, FBJSL has raised over $2.1 million for local charities across Fort Bend County through projects such as the Charity Ball, Sugar Plum Market, Children’s Book & Author, Glitter & Gloss, Pancakes & Pajamas, Charity Golf Tournament, and “Edible Heirlooms” and “Treasures from the Bend, Rich in History & Flavor” cookbook sales. Presented by title sponsor Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and supported by the City of Stafford, the event will again be held at the Stafford Centre Performing Arts Theatre and Convention Center. FBJSL and The Fred & Mabel R. Parks Youth Ranch Dedicate New Recreation Center

The Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) and The Fred & Mabel R. Parks Youth Ranch held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, December 3rd, 2011 dedicating the new recreation center made possible by the 2011 FBJSL Charity Ball’s proceeds. Parks Youth Ranch was established to address an identified gap in services for abused, at risk and homeless youth in Fort Bend County. In February 2011 the 90-day emergency youth shelter and counseling center opened and is serving youth between the ages of 13 to 17 years of age. The ranch houses three facilities: The George Counseling Center, a temporary shelter and a new recreation center. Referrals come from Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Juvenile Probation or the community. (more…)

FBJSL and William B. Travis High School Raise Funds for the Cause!

Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) proudly accepted a check from William B. Travis High School athletic trainers in the amount of $800. The League will use the donation from Travis High School and that of other partnering organizations, including Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, to further the community’s fight against breast cancer. FBJSL is working with the American Cancer Society in an ongoing, collaborative effort to provide financial support for programs and services designed to improve quality of life, provide access to early detection and treatment, and diminish suffering for Fort Bend County breast cancer patients. FBJSL Announces 2012 Sugar Plum Market Proceeds and Beneficiaries

The 2012 Sugar Plum Market, presented by the Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) and Methodist Sugar Land Hospital (MSLH), is proud to announce the proceeds and beneficiaries of another successful event. Total proceeds from this year’s Market are a record-breaking $203,300 and were presented to local Fort Bend County charities on December 13th at an Encore Party held at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and underwritten by Trustmark Bank. The following beneficiaries each received a portion of the event proceeds: American Red Cross, The Arc of Fort Bend County, Boys & Girls Club of Fort Bend, Child Advocates of Fort Bend, Fort Bend Rainbow Room, Fort Bend County Women’s Center, AccessHealth (formerly Fort Bend Family Health Center, Inc.), Fort Bend Family Promise, Fort Bend Lawyers Care, Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse, Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land, Literacy Council of Fort Bend County and Texana Center. FBJSL’s Community Assistance Fund also received a portion of the proceeds.

This year’s “Peace, Love, Sugar Plum” Market was a huge success with shoppers enjoying the colorful, groovy decorations and more than 100 unique vendors. “We are thrilled with the proceeds raised from the Market which will allow us to contribute to so many worthy agencies in our community,” said FBJSL President Laura Thompson. FBJSL Announces 2013 Charity Ball Emcee, Auctioneer, and Live Entertainment

The Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) is pleased to announce our Emcee, Auctioneer, and Live Entertainment for the 2013 “Springtime in Paris” Charity Ball and Casino, presented by Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital. The event will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square with proceeds benefiting the Sugar Land Legacy Foundation’s Universally Accessible Playground Project and the FBJSL Community Assistance Fund.

Laura Reynolds will serve as the 2013 Charity Ball’s Emcee. Laura began her radio career as a disc jockey in Columbus, Nebraska on a dare from her high school teacher and found out that she loved working in radio. Along the way to Houston, Laura worked in Columbia, Missouri as a DJ where she also won several statewide awards for her commercial and public service writing as well as awards for her newscasts. Laura is the Assistant Program Director for SportsRadio 610, Talk 650 and the Texans Radio Network. You can hear her doing afternoon traffic reports for SportsRadio 610, 100.3 KILT FM and Mix 96.5. You can also hear Laura doing traffic reports prior to Texans football games on both Sports Radio 610 and KILT FM. (more…)

The Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) was pleased to award $2,500 Community Assistance Fund (CAF) Grants to Crisis Intervention of Houston, Inc., and Fort Bend Lawyers Care.

Crisis Intervention of Houston, Inc., (CIH) has served more than 2 million people in crisis. Through a collaborative effort, Crisis Intervention of Houston provides residents of Fort Bend County a hotline specific to middle and high school students in the Fort Bend county area and also provides crisis response to those students. FBJSL funding will be utilized for Suicide Prevention Training for teachers, school administrators, counselors and interested adults and will enable CIH to implement a much needed Survivors of Suicide support group. FBJSL Names Volunteer of the Year

The Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) is pleased to announce that Brigit Engleman was recently named as the 2011 - 2012 Volunteer of the Year. A member of the League since 2003, Brigit has served on a variety of committees and placements within the League and has held numerous leadership positions within the organization. She has served on numerous special event committees, the Beneficiary Review Committee and Advisory Council, and has played key roles on the Sugar Plum Market as well as on other League events and core placements. She served six years in various roles on the FBJSL Board of Directors, including serving as President during 2009 - 2010. Brigit has also been very active with Child Advocates of Fort Bend, including serving as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) since 2003, assisting with the CASA Home Tour and presently serves on the Board of Directors. Currently she serves on the Advisory Council of Parks Youth Ranch. (more…)

The FBJSL Volunteer Scholarship - The FBJSL Volunteer Scholarship applicant must be an outstanding Fort Bend female high school senior who has completed at least 100 hours of high school community service, has a minimum GPA of 2.5 and desires to pursue higher education in the 2012-2013 school year. FBJSL Seeking New Members for the 2012-2013 League Year!

Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) has begun its membership drive for the 2012 – 2013 League year. Provisional membership is available to women ages 23 and older. Women interested in learning more about the League are encouraged to attend our annual Bring-A- Friend social at PF Chang’s in Sugar Land on Thursday, May 24th at 6:00 p.m. Two informational meetings will also be held on July 12th and August 7th at a location to be announced.

Along with events such as Charity Ball and Sugar Plum Market, FBJSL members will have the opportunity to provide direct service to the following agencies: Child Advocates of Fort Bend, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry, Fort Bend Community Partners Rainbow Room, Fort Bend County Women’s Center, Fort Bend Seniors, Houston Museum of Natural Science-Sugar Land, Literacy Council of Fort Bend County, Lunches of Love, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land and Fort Bend Teen Service League (FBTSL), a mentoring project of FBJSL. FBJSL Seeking New Members for the 2012-2013 League Year!

Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) has begun its membership drive for the 2012 – 2013 League year. In addition to provisional members, FBJSL accepts transfer memberships for new members who have successfully completed a provisional course at another Junior League, Junior Service League or similarly structured organization. Provisional and transfer memberships are available to women ages 23-49.

Women interested in learning more about the League are encouraged to attend our annual Bring-A- Friend social at PF Chang’s in Sugar Land on Thursday, May 24th at 6:00 p.m. Two informational meetings will also be held on July 12th at Azuma on the Lake in Sugar Land and August 7th at a location to be announced. FBJSL also offers membership as a Sustainer for ladies age 50 and older who are interested in joining the League. Congratulations to Romy Landeck and Simone Manuel for competing at AT&T Winter Nationals in Atlanta, GA on December 1st - December 3rd.

Romy finaled in the 200m Breast and finished 22nd overall with a time of 2:35.44. Simone finaled in the 100m Free and finished 18th overall with a time of 56.54. FCST Swimmers at Texas State Meet

Congratulations to the 23 swimmers who competed at the Texas Age Group Swimming state meet (TAGS) in The Woodlands on March 9th-12th. The meet was fast and FCST swimmers stepped up to the challenge and had some great racing over the four day meet.

Congratulations to Chris Yeager for achieving his first USA Swimming Sectional time by swimming to a 9th place finish in the 13-14 1000 Free with a time of 9:56.07. Chris’ 1000 Free, as well as his 1650 Free which he placed 8th overall were new USA Swimming AAAA times. In addition, Chris placed 16th in the 500 Free and had 100% best times at the meet. (more…)

Three additional First Colony Swim Team athletes have committed to collegiate swimming this fall. This makes a total of 8 members of the FCST “Class of 2012” who will continue their swimming carriers in colleges across the country.

Antoine Marc, graduating from Westside High School, will swim for Texas A&M while studying Molecular & Cellular Biology. He’s a distance swimmer having gone to the state high school meet in the 500 freestyle and has qualified for Spring Junior Nationals in several events. (more…)
