Hosts Asian-Indian ‘101’ Seminar for Senior Staff

Sugar Land, TX News

Posted June 22, 2009

In an ongoing effort to enhance the City’s ability to deliver excellent services to all residents, a half-day Asian-Indian “101” seminar was held for City department directors and key staff on June 4. The program was the second in a series of sessions hosted by the City Manager’s Multi-Cultural Advisory Team. The session included a presentation on the demography and customs of the four main regions of India, with a focus on why Asian-Indians choose to live in Sugar Land and how their culture impacts local service delivery. Following the presentation, attendees were able to ask a panel of community leaders specific questions such as whether or not emergency notifications need to be translated, what the perception of government is within the Asian-Indian community and which business etiquette practices need to be better understood by City employees.

Asian-Indians are one of the fastest growing and most educated minority groups in the United States. Though this minority group makes up less than one percent of the United States population, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated Sugar Land’s Asian-Indian population at more than 6 percent in 2000, and City officials expect that number to be much higher in the 2010 Census.

The City of Sugar Land’s newest park, known as Duhacsek Park, was officially opened on May 5. The 50-acre Duhacsek Park was donated to the City by Walter and Virginia Duhacsek, who moved there in 1956 to enjoy life away from urban development. In their later years, the Duhacsek’s chose to donate their land and home to Sugar Land for others to enjoy as they had done. “The natural beauty and peacefulness of this area also makes it an ideal place for special family occasions, such as weddings and reunions,” Browne said. “Having a diverse range of people able to use this area, honors the trust the Duhacsek’s placed in the City when they donated their homestead.” In preparation for its use as a park, the City added a quarter-acre pond, baseball and volleyball facilities, a pavilion with barbeques, a parking lot and restrooms.

People will also be able to reserve the Duhacsek’s house, which remains on the property and includes a fully equipped kitchen and several rooms suitable for small group activities.

Duhacsek Park, 17034 Richmond Road, is located at the intersection of Richmond Road and Voss Road and is available for use by reservation only. Reservations can be made by calling the Parks and Recreation Department on (281) 275-2885.

Parks Foundation and their $500,000 challenge grant and a $300,000 grant from the George Foundation, an 8-acre ranch in Fairchilds has been purchased and plans are well underway to develop a counseling center and temporary shelter for youth 13 to 17 years of age.The ranch has officially been named The Fred and Mabel R. Parks Youth Ranch.The organization’s new incorporated name will be Youth Services of Fort Bend but will be known throughout the community as The Parks Youth Ranch. Adolescents who are homeless, whether from abuse and neglect, abandonment or family discord, face many hurdles. These hurdles stem from their age and developmental stage, their lack of proper adult support, of knowledge of available resources and concerns about law enforcement and social services involvement.Homeless youth have become our disadvantaged and silent population.The shelter and counseling center will allow community agencies to refer at risk youth for counseling and/or shelter services. Services will focus on creating a stable living environment, continuing education and connecting to community based social services. A capital campaign is underway and many naming opportunities ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 are available.Construction on the counseling center will begin in June followed by the shelter.Interested donors are asked to contact Linda Shultz at 281-778-0150 or email LDShultz@gamil.com

Lamar CISD Bowie Elementary School Closure May 4 – 8, 2009
Sugar Land, Texas News
Posted on May 4, 2009

There has been a highly probable case of H1N1 (swine) flu in a Bowie Elementary student.As a result, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, the Fort Bend County Health and Human Services Department has recommended that we close the school for a week to help prevent spread of disease further.

The school will be closed for the entire week of May 4 – 8, 2009 and could be closed the following week pending notification from the Fort Bend County Health and Human Services Department.

Please be reminded that the situation with the H1N1 (swine) flu is serious.Although the cases in the U.S. have not been as severe as in Mexico, we are taking these measures to try and avoid an escalation of illness here.

Also remember, do not send your child to school if your child is sick.

Flu-like symptoms include fever, and some or all of these: cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, chills, headache, extreme tiredness (fatigue).

Any flu-like symptoms, with or without fever, together with a history of travel to Mexico in the last 7 days, are also reasons not to send your child to school.

The Fluor Community Came Together for A Very Successful Golf for Fort Bend 2009!
Sugar Land, Texas News
Posted on May 4, 2009

Golf for Fort Bend made its debut in 2008, with an ambitious goal: Raise awareness of crisis situations in Fort Bend County and raise funds to support local charities through community outreach, volunteerism and education.This was a challenge that still drives each of us, and reminds us that every effort, no matter how small, can make a difference in the lives of others.

For 2008 and 2009, the GFFB committee chose to support Fort Bend Family Promise, the only homeless shelter in Fort Bend County.FBFP works with local agencies (both private and state run) to help homeless families create a safe and financially secure life for themselves.The FBFP program includes financial counseling, continuing education, job skills training, job placement and emotional support for families in crisis.

The FBFP Family Center is an aging facility, generously on loan from New Hope Lutheran Church.Although the building was provided at no charge, it has many shortcomings.The facility is not large enough to house families when church space is unavailable, it struggles to meet city safety codes, has almost no room for storage, and is on the outskirts of Fort Bend County – making transportation of families a difficult task.For these and many more reasons, FBFP is in desperate need of a home of their own.Of the funds from Golf for Fort Bend 2008 and 2009, 100% will be used to jump-start the Fort Bend Family Promise Capital Fund.

The Golf for Fort Bend Wine & Food Party (March 22nd) and the Golf for Fort Bend Tournament (March 23rd), both held at Sweetwater Country Club, were great events for all.Increased volunteer participation, gourmet food and wine, photo booth, and “heated” live and silent auctions that boasted items from a Vacation Home in Hawaii to a 23-carat Blue Topaz and raised $25,000, made this year one to remember!

The Golf for Fort Bend Committee increased its overall donation by 40% in year two - From $50,000 to $70,000!In this stretched economy, this is a true testament to the dedication of the committee and the support of the Fort Bend community. On behalf of the 2009 Golf for Fort Bend Committee, THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT!We look forward to an even greater community impact in 2010.

Look for the 2010 Beneficiary Application, to be released in June, 2009.For more information on Golf for Fort Bend or to submit a beneficiary application, please visit www.GolfForFortBend.org.To learn more about Fort Bend Family Promise, please visit www.FortBendFamilyPromise.org.

The Sugar Land Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor the outbreak of swine flu.Currently there are no reported cases in Sugar Land. The City continues to work with other agencies and health care providers and is following the recommendations of Sugar Land’s public health authority, Dr. Joe Anzaldua, who continues to emphasize the importance of everyday preventative steps to stay safe.These include washing hands, covering mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing and not reporting to work when feeling ill.

The creation of a city health authority was part of several past efforts to prepare for a possible pandemic.The city also developed a Disease Control and Response Plan to address a variety of public health threats, including pandemic influenza.

Sugar Land’s Office of Emergency Management is a participant in daily statewide conference calls addressing resources and preparedness efforts to address the spread of swine flu through Texas. Other efforts include coordinating and partnering with agencies and area healthcare providers and distributing educational information to the public via the City’s Web site and other communications tools.

Six Code Violations, Repeat Offenses to be Cited Directly to Court in Missouri City
Sugar Land, Texas News
Posted on April 29, 2009

Starting May 18, Missouri City property owners who violate any of six certain housing codes may find themselves cited directly to court. “To keep all our neighborhoods looking their best and to protect property values around the City, we are stepping up efforts to carry out the City’s Code Enforcement program,” said Mike Fogarty, Coordinator in the Code Enforcement Division. “More than seven months have passed since Hurricane Ike hit the region, so we are eager to have all subdivisions restored to their condition before the storm. By intensifying our Code Enforcement efforts, we are fulfilling our mission to keep Missouri City clean and safe.”

Following the direction of City Council, inspectors with the City’s Code Enforcement Division will issue citations beginning May 18 when they observe homes with:

Grass or weeds higher than nine inches;

Junk or abandoned vehicles, including those that have been inoperable for 72 consecutive hours and those with expired license plates or inspection stickers;

Trash or debris piled in the yard or street, trash containers left out before or after any subdivision’s designated times for trash collection, or trash containers that are left visible from a public or private roadway (outside of times for trash pick up);

Vehicles parked on grass;

Storm-damaged structures, including downed fences;

Pools that have not been properly maintained.

For major storm-damaged structures that are still in disrepair, such as damaged roofs, homeowners will be cited directly to court unless they can provide documentation outlining sufficient reasons why repairs have not been completed. The City’s Code Enforcement Division should receive this documentation prior to May 18. In addition, property owners who are found to have repeated a code violation of any kind within a 12-month period can also receive a direct citation to court for those violations.

Since the City began code sweeps of neighborhoods in August 2008, more than 4,200 first notice letters have been issued for code violations. Of those infractions, 83 percent were corrected after the first letter was sent. Of the more than 700 remaining violations, over 600 were corrected after a second, final notice letter was issued. The remaining 100-plus property owners were cited to court for non-compliance with City codes.

“While we appreciate the majority of citizens are complying with our code enforcement initiatives, there are still outstanding violations that must be addressed,” Fogarty said. “Missouri City was honored as one of America’s ‘Best Places to Live’ and we want to continue to maintain the highest housing standards."

The maximum fine for a code violation is $500 per occurrence of each violation.A code violation that has not been corrected can be issued a citation to court daily. Code sweeps are continuing throughout the City. Notice is provided to residents when Code Enforcement inspectors will be in their neighborhoods. In addition to this stepped up program, the Code Enforcement Division continually responds to any code issues reported throughout the City.

For a neighborhood schedule of Code Enforcement sweeps, visit missouricitytx.gov/PDFs/News/sweeps-II. To report a code violation, call the Code Enforcement Hotline at 281-403-8560. For questions about the code sweeps, call 281-403-8500 and ask for Code Enforcement.

The United Way Provides Meals to Seniors Over The Weekend
Sugar Land, Texas News
Posted on April 24, 2009

It has long been a goal of Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels to offer meals to senior citizens on the Meals on Wheels program over the weekend.In the past meals have been offered Monday thru Friday. However, with the help of a couple of grants, meals are now being provided on Saturday. “It is a long time between Saturday at noon to Monday at noon, which is how long the seniors have to wait to eat again. I’ve tried not eating for 48 hours and it is hard, so we know it is difficult for the seniors who may be taking medication or not feeling their best,” said Manuela Arroyos, chief executive officer, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels.

However, due to a $12,000 grant from The United Way, frail seniors who depend solely on the Meals on Wheels program for their meals will have a Sunday meal. “We can not begin to thank the United Way for all of their support throughout the year and with this very important project.Jan Ridings, the United Way’s area director for Fort Bend and Waller Counties as well as all of the staff at the United Way continues to be aGod-sendas they continue to support our mission for so many years now,” Arroyos said.

FBS’s mission, Arroyos noted is, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels is committed to helping seniors remain independent by enhancing their quality of life through services and resources. Many of the senior citizens on the MOW program, no longer drive which leaves them isolated and alone with no way to go to the store.

“The day will probably come for all of us when we have to put our car keys in the junk drawer, and that day is a defining moment in one’s life. That is why the MOW program is so important, it breaks the isolation and provides hot nutritious meals for those who would otherwise go hungry. The volunteers who deliver the meals take time to visit with the seniors, which brightens their day and helps curve the loneliness,” Arroyos said. Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and a United Way Agency. Settlers Way Elementary goes green and gives back to our community

Going green is definitely a growing trend these days, raising the public’s awareness of the importance of recycling in our community.But thinking about it and doing it are quite different. At Settlers Way Elementary, however, students are truly going green in a number of ways, and they recently asked the community to help out with a major project that is making a difference.

“We decided as a group that we wanted to do more to help our community,” said fifth-grader Stephanie Gilbert, president of SWE’s Student Council.“We already recycle paper and plastics at Settlers Way and that’s important.But when we heard about computer recycling, we thought it was an even better idea!”

To jump-start the school’s computer recycling program, Student Council sponsor Carol McDonough coordinated with Houston Computer Recycling, and SWE held its first Computer Recycling Day on Feb. 21.The event generated much community support and the students collected more than 150 pieces of computer equipment. “These are pieces that now won’t go in the garbage to leak dangerous chemicals into the ground,” said Nancy Cheng, Student Council secretary. “That will definitely help our environment.” After the event, more than $700 in recycling fees was donated back to the community through the East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry.

Student Council Vice President Dylan Alexander said the school was pleased to help with such a great cause.“It’s important for all of us to help where we can,” he said.“Whether it’s a big thing or a little thing, it all makes a difference.”
