I was once a member of the Doting Dog Owners Society but after a couple of two-legged human babies arrived within 18 months of each other, I did not renew my membership. While my dogs Elie and Shea may be wishing for more attention and pampering, many other four-legged babies in Sugar Land are living the Good Life.

Its Definitely A Dogs Life
Jeremy and Joanne Jurica are the owners of A Dogs Life: Luxury Dog Boutique located at Sugar Lands Town Square. The Juricas, who live in Sugar Land, have three dogs Timmy, Oreo and Abby.

When Abby joined the Jurica family, Joanne said she searched for cute doggie clothes but didnt find anything at the bigger stores. So I did some research and decided to start my online business and doing shows in the area. With such a great response from my customers, I decided to open the boutique in Sugar Land, she said.

The couple has had a great response to the store as Sugar Land residents love their pets.
They treat them as if they are part of the family not just a pet, said Joanne. I have customers that, when they go to the salonthe dog goes to the groomer; when they go to workthe dog goes to daycare. It is not a dog in a dog house world anymore.

Pampering Your Pet at Home
You wouldnt leave your child with just anyone and many pet owners feel the same way about their pets. The people at Greatwood Kennels recognize the growing need for pet owners to feel comfortable when they leave town, so they are building a cottage. This will be a home away from home with real beds and chairs, TV, radio and access to a play yard at all times. Your pet can come and go as he pleases, said Bennett. Better make reservations, though, as the cottage will be limited to six dogs. And they will be comfortable, as it will be air-conditioned and heated.

Money No Object
Why are Sugar Land pet owners willing to shell out big bucks to keep their pets healthy and pampered? Theyre simply part of the family. Caymus Dean is a 160-pound friend and protector to the Dean Family. Josalyn Dean says money is no object when a member of your family needs medical attention. Caymus tore his ACL and because of his size he had to go to a specialist at Gulf Coast Animal Hospital for the special surgery that only a few doctors in the country could do. After spending about $7,000, he is doing great and walks normal, Josalyn said. And, of course, dogs also deserve to be celebrated on their birthdays.

Tracey, who has a studio in old Sugar Land for her massage therapy business, also does dog desserts and birthday party catering through her second business Bone Jour. All items from Traceys bakery are homemade with natural human-grade ingredients. She offers themed bags such as Yappy Hour, which includes treats shaped like martini glasses and a champagne flute with vanilla-coated bubbles. Is your dog celebrating a birthday or are you welcoming a new doggie addition to the family? For $45, Tracey will prepare a bone-shaped cake with peanut butter or cream cheese/honey frosting and bone-shaped candle, put together a basket of assorted gourmet peanut butter bones and provide a stuffed toy and bandanna for the special dog.

And speaking of celebrations, A Dogs Life boutique recently hosted its first wedding ceremony on the steps of City Hall right before Valentines Day for Miss Rachel Rose Nelson and Mister Beauregard Jingles.

Doggie Couture
On her wedding day, Miss Rachel wore a special gown from A Dogs Life. Juricas boutique carries many couture items. Customers love the items that mirror theirs, said Joanne. For example, shoppers cant get enough of specialty items like the Chewy Vuiton Purse Toy or the Sniffany & Co. Toy and Bed. Dogs are welcome to come in and browse or (sniff) around. Of course, if you want to bring things to another level of dog love, Jurica said the boutique is also offering a registry for puppy showers.
