Sure, you can jump in your car or truck and head over to the nearest grocery store to stock your familys fruit bowl. Even if the store is giving away balloons or tasty
cookies that day, though, its never going to be as much fun as picking your own produce straight off the tree or vine.
Spend the day at an area farm or orchard and not only will your children learn about where their produce comes from (besides the store), but they will have the fruit of their effortsliterallyto take home as a reward.
Mmmm!
Check out these area farms and/or orchards for pick-your-own fruit or fresh produce:
The Strawberry Patch*

Owner Melissa Boerger says the crop is wonderful this year, and they expect to have strawberries through the end of May. Check out blackberries in early May through mid-June and, while the peach crop is a little iffy
this year because of the weather, check on the status in early May, too. This is the tidiest strawberry patch Ive ever seen, and the berries are always tasty. The Boergers also make their own jams and jellies and other
items, which they sell at their store at the patch. Its a nice drive south on U.S. 59 to Wharton and worth it. Best to call ahead to check on the status of the berries. In addition to the berry picking, check out the
Fun on the Farm Activity Area, which includes a hay ride, hay bale maze, rolling tunnel and large sand box. Price for the activity area is $3. Strawberries cost $2 for a pound. Bring cash or checks.

In addition to berries, you can pick your own wildflowers. This is near the site of the annual Renaissance Festival. On the way back home, theres a great little restaurant in the town of Todd Mission. Ask for directions
to the grill at Kings Orchard. Its the perfect end to a day of picking. Bring bug spray, sunscreen, a hat and a change of clothes, especially during blueberry season when its extremely hot.
