You heard her at lunchtime and now you can hear her over breakfast. She's Michele Fisher, formerly of 104 KRBE's Total Request Lunch and now partner in crime to a fellow
Sugar Land resident-Sam Malone on "Sam Malone and the Morning Show on Mix 96.5." Fisher spent six months staying at home with her two children, cooking, working out as usual and-of course-shopping in Sugar Land! Now
she's tickled pink to be back on the air.
"I always wanted to do a morning show but never imagined it would be with Sam and Natalie plus our crew- Jay-Rod, Hunter and Lauren. Just an awesome bunch of people! I am truly blessed and so grateful for the
opportunity," Fisher says on the Mix website. Sugar Land Magazine recently asked Fisher for some more details on her new job- and her life here in Sugar Land.
SUGAR LAND MAGAZINE: How long have you been living in Sugar Land and where are you from originally?
MICHELE FISHER: Jason and I have been in Sugar Land for eight years and love it. I grew up in the Woodlands. Though laid out differently, the two cities have a great hometown feel- both are wonderful areas to
raise a family. Jason grew up in Sugar Land, attended Dulles High School and is now an assignment editor at KHOU Channel 11. We met at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.
SUGAR LAND MAGAZINE: What's your typical day? How has it changed lately?
MICHELE FISHER: Soooo different than before. I'm up EARLY- 3:45 a.m. and then into the station by 4:45 a.m. Breakfast at my desk, usually Special K or Cheerios with fruit, maybe a bagel or muffin, and then I do my
show prep. At 5:30 a.m., I hit the airwaves solo and then Sam and I start together at 6 and laugh until 9. We wrap up at that time, and it's back to my desk to answer e-mails, brainstorm, do promotions, work on the next
day's show, voice some production, etc. I'm usually headed back to Sugar Land by 11 a.m. and either I hit the gym or I try o catch a nap. Can't do both because the kiddos are out of school by 2:40 p.m., so I opt to
exercise unless I have just run myself into the ground and rest is a must! Once I have the kids it's all about them. We snack, do homework, play board games, lots of playtime outside ... you name it! Dinner as a family
and then books and bedtime follow and then, once they're down, it's TV and laundry for Mommy. Got to watch all the hot shows, of course, and got to keep up with the housework! Lights out for me comes about 10 or 10:30
and then I do it all over again. It's great and of course my hubby's help-he handles the kids in the morning-makes it work.
SUGAR LAND MAGAZINE: Where did "Mikki Boo" come from? Sam calls you that.
MICHELE FISHER: "Mikki Boo" started years ago. "Mikki" is actually the name I grew up with. Michele is my middle name, but no one actually called me by that. All my friends and family refer to me as "Mikki" to
this day. Sam added the "Boo" one day when I told him I was nervous about being on the floor at Compaq Center (now Lakewood Church) to host some half-time festivities during a Rockets game. He thought it was humorous. I
asked, "What if they 'boo' me"? And, he said, "everyone should be booed once in their life. It'll toughen you up, make you strong." So he told our listeners that my nickname was now "Boo" and to boo me at the game that
night- AND THEY DID! But it turned out to be pretty sweet. They ended up yelling a "boo" that sounded more like a cheer than a yell of dislike. It was an exciting moment and it's one of those that made me realize the
power of radio.
SUGAR LAND MAGAZINE: Do your kids listen to you on the air?
(Michele has three children: Emma, 7, Jackson, 4, and Liza, 12, who is Michele's stepdaughter and lives in Harlingen.)
MICHELE FISHER: My kids do listen to me from time to time, and they think it's pretty cool. Jackson, of course, just gets excited to hear my voice. Emma is starting to like the response she gets when she tells
people who her Mommy is.
SUGAR LAND MAGAZINE: What are your favorite places in Sugar Land to shop, eat, meet friends and take the kids?
MICHELE FISHER: Well, I'm a shop-a-holic, so I love to hit First Colony Mall. I have a little boutique that I think is a treasure, Kiss Kiss, and then Target - got to go Target at least once a week. As far as
restaurants, Jason and I enjoy Perry's Steakhouse. P.F. Chang's is yummy and, for a casual drink, Baker St. Pub. With two little ones, you need family-friendly places. I think anyone who's planning to open a casual
restaurant in Sugar Land needs to have a playground! The Town Square has become fun, too, and I recently discovered Vineyard on the Square. It's like a Starbucks for wine. How cool is that?
SUGAR LAND MAGAZINE: Is it hard to juggle work and home? You seem very high energy. How can we "tired" moms be more like that?
MICHELE FISHER: I think there are challenges for any working mom- the biggest being a good balance. My family, my children are everything to me, and I make sure that if one day we don't have a large quantity of
time, then we make it quality time. I also make sure we have dinner around the table, and we talk about how everyone's day was. Jason is a great dad and wonderful husband. We share responsibilities 0/50.
I'm told all the time that I have a lot of energy and really that's just my personality. Working out on a regular basis helps a lot, but I think it's just who I am. I have a beautiful life. Happiness translates into
positive energy. So my advice to moms is take a good look at your life, focus on your blessings and also make time for yourself. Do what makes you happy and the energy will come.
