There will also be a vendor/market fair with over 60 local business providing great services and crafts. A kids’ fun zone with a rock wall, jump swing, and face painting will be provided. All proceeds benefit the George Ranch High School Band.

Sugar Land, TX News - Expanded Recycling Program in Sugar Land Receives State Recognition

Sugar Land, TX News (March 12, 2014) - The Texas Public Works Association (TPWA) awarded Sugar Land an Operations Excellence Award for increased recycling efforts during 2013 that reduced garbage sent to landfills by 34 percent.

Sugar Land’s diversion rate - the amount of material kept out of landfills - has increased each year since the City launched an expanded solid waste program in 2011 that included automated curbside collection and expanded recycling. The City’s goal for 2014 is to achieve a 40 percent diversion rate. (more…)

Sugar Land, TX News - Cornerstone Christian Academy Students Receive Duke TIP’s State Recognition

Sugar Land, TX News (March 10, 2014) - Leah Marut and Lanz Reyes, students at Cornerstone Christian Academy, have received state recognition as part of the Duke TIP seventh-grade talent search. Leah scored a 1590 on the SAT and has been invited to participate in the Center for Summer Studies. Lanz scored a 19 on the ACT and has been invited to participate in the Academy for Summer Studies. Both students will be invited to a special awards ceremony where they will receive medals for their accomplishments.

Sugar Land, TX News - Crime Rate in Sugar Land Remains Among Nation’s Lowest

Sugar Land, TX News (March 5, 2014) - Part 1 crimes in Sugar Land increased 3.6 percent last year while the City’s five-year trend shows an overall decrease of more than 18.5 percent. The results were included in the Sugar Land Police Department’s 2013 Annual Report.

Part 1 crimes include assault, auto theft, burglary, homicide, theft, robbery and auto burglary.

The most recent Part 1 data shows Sugar Land’s overall crime rate is 40 percent below the state and national averages. The City’s violent crime rate compares even better at more than 205 percent below the state and national averages. (more…)
