The Sugar Land Skeeters announced today that the club has purchased the rights of left-handed pitcher and former Skeeters Team MVP Jason Lane from the Lancaster Barnstormers in exchange for cash considerations and a player to be named later. The announcement was made by Skeeters Manager Gary Gaetti and Director of Operations Michael Kirk.
In March, Sugar Land traded Lane’s 2013 negotiating rights to Lancaster prior to his release from the Minnesota Twins organization. Along with Lane, the Skeeters also traded the rights of infielder Jason Botts and outfielder Bubba Bell, in exchange for centerfielder Adam Godwin.
Lane, a former Houston Astro and World Series participant, was named the Skeeters’ 2012 Most Valuable Player following the club’s inaugural season. After joining Sugar Land in June, the lefty starter went 9-5 with a 3.17 ERA (39ER/110.2IP) and one complete game over 18 games (17 starts). His 110.2 innings pitched ranked first among the Skeeters staff. He also made an impact from the other side of the plate, playing 61 games primarily in the outfield and hitting .275 with nine home runs.
Originally selected by the Astros in the sixth round of the June 1999 Draft, Lane owns a career 11-5 record with a 3.89 ERA (66ER/152.2IP) over 12 combined minor league seasons. At the plate, he owns a .280 average with 164 career home runs and 694 RBI. Over six Major League seasons with Houston (2002-07) and San Diego (2007), Lane holds a .241 average in 497 career games.
Sugar Land faces off against the Long Island Ducks this Thursday, April 18 at 7:05 p.m. at Constellation Field. Limited tickets still remain for Opening Day and the weekend kickoff to Season 2 with the Skeeters. Fans are encouraged to act now and be a part of the Opening Weekend festivities.
