William P. Clements NJROTC/NNDCC Unit selected Cadet Kiana Farokhpour as the January Cadet of the Month. Cadet Farokhpour is a 9th grade student, which classifies her as a Naval Science I Student. Cadet Farokhpour possesses characteristics exceptional to her peer group. In addition her unmatched drive and determination sets her apart. She stated, “Coming to Clements is probably one of the greatest decisions I’ve made; but it comes second to joining NJROTC. I’ve met and made outstanding friends, I’ve learned many characteristics of becoming a good leader, and it changed me for all the better.” She has learned all the required knowledge (chain of command, orders to the sentry, etc.), and when in uniform she emulates a recruiting poster picture. Additionally, Cadet Farokhpour is the only female on the Armed Drill Team. She looks at spinning the 9.5 lb weapons as just another challenge. Kiana closed her statement with, “I now live by the Navy Core Values, Honor, Courage and Commitment, and now there is nothing I can’t handle.” She is the daughter of Gity Haghkhah and Von Farokhpour. Cadet Farokhpour will receive the Cadet of the Month Ribbon, Cadet of the Month Certificate, and a free uniform day pass.

Six athletes from B.F. Terry High School were named to the THSCA 2011 AAAA Academic All-State Football Team. Named to the second team are Kelechi Amushi, Miranda George and Shawn Whitehair. Named to the Honorable Mention team are Isaac Cox, Ronald Irving and Cody Williams.

“These athletes have made the choice to consistently excel both in the classroom and on the field,” said Campus Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Tim Teykl. “Strong character, outstanding class rank and GPA, along with a fine standardized exam score, are just a few of the incredible accomplishments by these youngsters.”

Amushie, #24, started at defensive back and was a captain on the varsity football team. He also earned District 23-AAAA honors (Academic All-District Football Team and all-District Defensive Back). Cox, #54, started at offensive tackle. He also earned District 23-AAAA honors (Academic All-District Football Team and All-District Offensive Line).

George, football manager, also earned District 23-AAAA Academic All-District Honors. Irving, #77, played offensive line and was named to the District 23-AAAA Academic All-District Football Team. Whitehair, #58, played offensive line and was named to the District 23-AAAA Academic All-District Football Team. Williams, #8, quarterback, was also named to the District 23-AAAA Academic All-District Football Squad.

The athletes chose a teacher to pose with them in the official picture, an educator that played a positive, significant part in their life at Terry High. Williams chose Ms. Johni Thiebaud, Amushie chose Ms. Shana Wenzel, Cox chose Mr. Larry Sanders, George chose Coach Kevin “Doc” Roberts; Irving chose Mr. Neal Huebotter and Whitehair chose Mr. John Troutman.

Since THSCA has begun recognizing Academic All-State football players in Texas, The Terry Rangers have placed over 85 athletes on the list. Terry was named a MetLife National Breakthrough School in 2011. Principal at Terry High is Dr. Vera Wehring.

Missouri City will soon take part in a Statewide Warrant Roundup, allowing offenders to settle their fines without going to jail. Payments will be accepted in person, by phone and online beginning Feb. 11 until March 4.

The roundup takes place Feb. 25 through March 4. Individuals who do not settle their fines risk arrest by the Missouri City Police Department at their homes, schools and businesses. (more…)

Students at Jones Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of school on January 30 by taking part in various activities to benefit students, as well as the community. Students celebrated with a 100th Day Parade, an appearance by Zero the Hero, and various classroom activities.

The school also set a goal of raising $100 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, but through the generous donations of students, staff and parents, the school surpassed its goal by raising $750. The school also collected more than 100 pounds of food items to benefit the East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry. The event was coordinated by Reginald Taylor, math specialist.

Fort Bend ISD’s Extended Day Program (EDP) provides full day service during Spring Break to all K-5 grade students who are currently enrolled in the district. Texana announces their First Annual Fundraising Golf Tournament, the Texana Tee Off, scheduled for March 19, 2012 at the Weston Lakes Country Club in Weston Lakes near Fulshear. The tournament is open to the public and is expected to be a good time for all who participate. The Texana Tee Off is being chaired by Mary Rose Zdunkewicz, the Mayor of Weston Lakes, assisted by co-chairs J.C. Whitten and Anthony Francis.

Current planning of this 18 hole scramble tournament includes; lunch, dinner, live auction, raffle, as well as other fun and games. With spring right around the corner, the City of Sugar Land is already making plans for its upcoming event season.

Kicking off the event season this year is the third annual Cultural Kite Festival on Saturday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Sugar Land Memorial Park, 15300 University Blvd.

Activities will include a kite museum, kite-making workshop, kite flying lessons and competitions, walk-around entertainment and cultural performances. There will also be food and refreshment booths with cultural cuisine available during the event. Extra parking and shuttle services will be accessible at the UH Sugar Land Campus, 14000 University Blvd. This year’s event promises extremely beautiful and diverse kites along with cultural entertainment. The Sugar Land Skeeters have announced that they have signed major league veteran outfielder and designated hitter Jason Botts and recent Houston Astros prospect and outfielder Drew Locke.

“The Skeeters are excited to have two more great bats to add to our team,” said Gary Gaetti, Manager of the Sugar Land Skeeters. “Botts and Locke both see the ball well. Expect to see strong production from our lineup.”

Botts, a 6’5” 250lb switch hitting outfielder from the Dallas/Fort Worth area finished last season in the New York Mets organization with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. He made his major league debut for the Rangers Sept. 4, 2005 against the Baltimore Orioles. He was called up three more times for a total of 93 games. He comes to the Skeeters with career stats in Triple A of .290 batting average, 612 runs scored, 1033 hits, 233 doubles, 127 home runs and 618 RBIs in 1009 games played from 2005 through 2011. Brownie Girl Scout Troop #29170 participated in a year-long service project. Dickinson Elementary in Greatwood collects used drink pouches to be recycled. Instead of having kids throw away all those Capri-Sun, Kool Aid and other drink pouches in the trash, they put them in a specified can where every two weeks, Troop 29170 empties the can, removes the straws, squeezes out any left-over juice and wraps them in stacks to be recycled. It’s a dirty job but….it’s helping our school be green!

Has anyone looked familiar on recent episodes of American Idol? Maybe someone singing in Galveston and advancing to the next round of competition in California? Then maybe you know Foster High School student Arielle Degueure.

The Richmond resident has been featured in a few snippets of the program as it airs footage from the early audition process. She originally auditioned in August with a cast of thousands in Houston. From there, she was one of only about 250 that were asked to audition again in Galveston.

Fort Bend ISD Board President, Susan Hohnbaum, sponsored a recent day-long leadership seminar as part of the FBISD Junior Student Leadership Program. The seminar was the third in a series of six that will be offered to the leadership class this school year. The session gave students the opportunity to meet with leaders of the Fort Bend County Juvenile Detention Center and the Fort Bend County Justice Center to learn about their roles in the community.

During their visit to the Fort Bend County Juvenile Detention Center, the leadership class met with Brian Fraser, Detention Superintendent; and Frankie Hill, Assistant Superintendent; who explained their roles at the center and shared details on how the center operates. As filing for local city races opened on February 6th, Himesh Gandhi was on the steps of City Hall to make official his run for Sugar Land City Council, At-Large Position 1.

Filing makes the campaign official but Gandhi has been working hard for some time to gain broad citizen support. The Gandhi campaign recently held a heavily attended kick-off rally at the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, with many elected officials, past and present, and community members in attendance.

“This is an exciting time to live in Sugar Land, one of the premier cities in Texas. We are on the threshold of a new era of expanded growth and success as exciting as any we have seen in the past two decades. I am passionate about contributing to the prosperity of Sugar Land. As a member of the Sugar Land community for over twenty years, I have witnessed firsthand our City’s ongoing success, due in large to the careful planning, expertise and wisdom of city leaders,” says Gandhi.

As the next At-Large Councilman, Gandhi will focus on strategically moving Sugar Land forward through financial accountability, quality development and an emphasis on city services and public safety. As a partner in a Sugar Land law firm, Gandhi has a solid legal background and extensive business experience in Sugar Land and Fort Bend County. He has been an active participant in Sugar Land government, serving as a member of many committees. Currently, Gandhi serves on the Sugar Land Planning and Zoning Commission and was a member of the recent Redistricting Committee. He has also served on the Sugar Land 4B Corporation for economic development and on the Building Standards Commission.

It’s common knowledge that the health craze has hit Texas and there are gyms on many corners. However, there is one group of dedicated Sugar Land men and women taking work-outs to a new level and building friendships and health benefits expected to last a lifetime.

This group of professionals from diverse fields and age groups are training at Lifetime Fitness, Sugar Land, for Ironman Triathlon competitions in the area.

An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike and a marathon 26.2-mile run, raced in that order and without a break. Most Ironman events have a strict time limit of 17 hours to complete the race. (more…)

FORT BEND ISD - Fort Bend ISD’s Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) members will take part in the Second Annual Darling Dash Memorial 5K Run and 1K Family Run/Walk on Sunday, February 26, from 8:00am to 10:00am, at Sweetwater Country Club (4400 Palm Royale Blvd., Sugar Land). SHAC members will form a team to walk and run in the race and serve as volunteers to help recruit participants.

Runners and walkers of ALL levels are welcome to participate in the Darling Dash. Registration completed online or postmarked by February 15 is $25 for adults (13 years and older) and $10 for youth (12 and younger). The registration fee after February 15 until race day is $30 adult and $15 youth. Post race refreshments will be provided. Awards will be presented to the top two male and female overall time; and to the top three male and female runners in six age categories: 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60-plus. At a recent presentation at the Fort Bend Family YMCA’s outreach program site at Mustang Park Community Center in Fresno, TX, representatives from Wal-Mart presented the YMCAs of Fort Bend County with a check for $40,000 from the Wal-Mart Foundation’s State Giving Program. The Walmart Foundation State Giving Program gift will help subsidize the operations of the seven YMCA Outreach Program Centers in Fort Bend County that are operated by the Fort Bend, TW Davis and Katy YMCA locations. “We are so happy to partner with the YMCA in Fort Bend County to help ensure that children who are most at risk get the attention they need to help them grow and succeed in life,” said Todd Manley, Regional Vice President for Walmart. Fort Bend County’s new tactical, armored response and rescue vehicle is expected to enhance the safety of SWAT officers throughout the region.

Known simply as the Bearcat, the newly realigned Fort Bend Regional SWAT Team will utilize the vehicle for deployments throughout the county.

The Bearcat, which carries up to 10 people, can traverse a variety of terrains. The vehicle has been utilized by police for barricaded situations, high-risk warrants, active shooters, dignitary transport and more. (more…)

They advance to State competition with a final score of 81.3 percent. The team’s highest-scoring area was Visual Display, with a score of 93 percent. for reaching the Class 5A Division I Finals at the City Council meeting held on Tues., Jan. 17. History will be made this spring when the Sugar Land Skeeters launch their inaugural season, bringing minor league baseball to Fort Bend County. To mark this epic event, a Grand Opening Gala entitled “History in the Making” will be held at Constellation Field on Saturday, April 14, 2012. The Skeeters are set to host an open audition for game day entertainment at Constellation Field. The auditions will take place Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Imperial Theathre in Sugar Land Town Square from 8:30am-5 pm. Those who audition will be competing for the opportunity to work for the Skeeters in key positions and the chance to perform at Historic Opening Day on April 26 and other games throughout the season.

“With the opening of a new ball park comes the opportunity to give a stage and an audience to all forms of entertainers,” said Tom Gorman, Executive Producer for the Sugar Land Skeeters. “Not only are we trying to fill traditional baseball positions, like public address announcers and national anthem singers, but we are also looking for all sorts of entertainers and personalities. On Friday, January 27, 2012, Congressman Pete Olson was at Clements High School presenting a Humanities Texas Award; during his tour of the campus he requested to speak to the cadets. He reflected on the units’ distinguished accomplishments and the value of the program to our nation’s future. He answered cadets’ questions concerning the proposed Oil Pipeline and Protect IP Act 2011, just to list a few. First year cadets were astonished to see Congressman Olson; amazed that he would find time in his busy schedule to visit them. However, the cadets that were in the program last year have great appreciation for Congressman Olson. Last year when the Navy elected to close the unit; Congressman Olson came to the rescue. He wrote congressional letters, made phone calls, made personal visits and somehow convinced the Assistant Secretary of the Navy to visit Clements campus. (more…)

Foster High School is home to the Regional Champions for Academic Decathlon. The team won the Region crown after competing January 20-21 in Porter. The team advances to the State Academic Decathlon Tournament, February 24-25 in San Antonio.

In addition to the team title, Foster won the Super Quiz Combined and was 2nd in Super Quiz Relay.Lamar Consolidated High finished 5th in the team standings. Foster’s Michael Duncan was the top scorer at the meet, with 8,673 points. Duncan placed first in the Honors Division, for students with Grade Point Averages (GPA) between 3.75 and 4.0. Foster’s Neil Byers was 2nd in the Honors Division.
Foster’s Laurel Toskey had the highest score in the Scholastic Division (GPA between 3.0 and 3.75) and Brad Killingsworth placed 3rd.

The David Crockett Middle School Parent Teacher Association, administrators, and counselors recently held the 5th annual Eighth Grade Career Day. The event invited various professionals from a variety of career fields to speak to students about what it takes to succeed in a globally fueled and competitive job market. Fort Bend ISD students are among 230,000 Texas students who will benefit from a $100,000 grant from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board to Junior Achievement (JA) of Southeast Texas. State Farm Agent, Darryl Mayo, presented the grant award to Rick Franke, president of JA of Southeast Texas, during a check presentation on January 26 at Ridgegate Elementary School. The grant will help fund JA’s financial literacy service-learning project, “What A Difference A Day Makes,” which allows high school students to serve as role models to younger students in their communities while sharing important knowledge about financial literacy, entrepreneurship and free enterprise. The Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees named Mike Hejducek as the new principal at Scanlan Oaks Elementary at its January 23 Board meeting. Hejducek is an experienced educational leader and has served in public education for 23 years. He most recently had served as the Head of Lower School for Grace School. Prior to this role, he opened Scanlan Oaks Elementary in 2004 as its first principal and also served FBISD as an assistant principal and art teacher. (more…)

Four Fort Bend ISD students have been selected by the United States Department of Education as candidates for the United States Presidential Scholars Program. Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the Nation’s highest honors for high school students. In honoring the Presidential Scholars, the President of the United States symbolically honors all graduating high school seniors of high potential.

The first ever baseball game to be played at Constellation Field will feature two Sugar Land High School teams, Fort Bend Independent School District’s William P. Clements High School and John Foster Dulles High School, on Saturday, April 21.

“It is only appropriate that the community’s stadium open with two Sugar Land high schools playing a baseball game,” said Matt O’Brien, President of the Sugar Land Skeeters. “This event is the first of many community events that will take place at the stadium.” (more…)

Sugar Land residents may soon receive phone calls asking about their satisfaction with City programs and services.

The City is continuing its citywide, every two-year telephone survey program conducted by Creative Consumer Research, an independent research firm based in Fort Bend County. The statistically valid and random telephone survey will take about three weeks to complete and will be conducted beginning the last week in February.

“We conduct this survey every two years,” said City Manager Allen Bogard. “We are proud of the level and quality of services and programs our residents currently enjoy, but we want to ensure that we continue on the right track. Our citizens’ feedback is very important, and I respectfully ask our residents to take 15 minutes to answer the survey questions, if called.” (more…)

The Touchdown Club of Houston awarded George Ranch High School a Special Achievement Award during its annual Sportsmanship Luncheon, Wednesday at the J.W. Mariott.

Terry High School was third out of 14 finalists for the 4A Sportsmanship Award. Lamar Consolidated High School was also nominated.

The recent completion of Sugar Land Regional Airport’s (SLRA) Taxilane Juliett creates up to seven sites for corporate hangars, facilities estimated to provide $700,000 per year from leases and fuel sales.

The majority of the 10-acre $7.8 million project was funded by a Federal Aviation Administration grant administered by the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Aviation Division. The Sugar Land airport’s share of the project was just over 10 percent. (more…)

Humanities Texas is pleased to announce that Michael T. Madden of Sugar Land has been named a recipient of the 2011 Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award.

Tyler Nelson, district director for U.S. Congressman Pete Olson, and Liz James, coordinator of educational programs at Humanities Texas, will present Mr. Madden with his award on Friday, January 27, at 1:00 p.m., at William P. Clements High School, 4200 Elkins Drive, Sugar Land.

Humanities Texas presents these awards annually to Texas classroom teachers who have made exemplary contributions in teaching, curriculum development and extracurricular programming. Nearly two hundred and thirty teachers across the state were nominated for the 2011 awards. (more…)

Starting Feb. 1, the Missouri City Recycling Center (1919 Scanlin Rd.) will start two new processes: The facility will begin accepting clear and colored glass; and all paper and flattened cardboard recyclables will have a separate marked container from all other materials.

Plastics, metals and glass can be mixed into the same marked container. The center will also continue to accept plastics (#1-5 and #7), aluminum, tin, steel cans and trays. (more…)

Several programs initiated by the Missouri City Parks & Recreation Department have been recognized by the Houston-Galveston Area Council as part of the 2011 Parks and Natural Areas Award competition. According to H-GAC, the projects that received awards in four categories serve as models for parks and natural areas in the entire region.

The City’s Three for Trees project was the winner in the “Policy Tools” category. This program helps replenish trees in the City’s parks and on the golf course with proceeds from a discount on three rounds of golf at Quail Valley Golf Course. (more…)

Sugar Land is seeking feedback for an update to its Comprehensive Plan, a document that charts a vision for the future and guides policy decisions affecting the city’s physical development.

The Comprehensive Plan update will focus on:
• informational updates to Chapters 1-4 based on 2010 U.S. Census data and recent development activity; and
• revisions to Chapter 5 incorporating Vision 2025 and Guiding Principles, a document adopted previously by City Council. (more…)

USA Swimming released the 2012 Club Excellence results, and FCST has been named a USA Swimming GOLD MEDAL Club! This is the first time FCST has achieved this honor, and FCST is the only Texas team to make the Top 20 this year.

The Club Excellence Program identifies the top 18 & under clubs based strictly on performance. The top 20 clubs are named Gold Medal clubs, the next 80 clubs are named Silver Medal clubs, and the remaining clubs with a Junior National qualifier are named Bronze Medal clubs. Points are based on world rankings, and only swimmers with Long Course Junior National times are eligible. (more…)

The Houston Texans mascot, TORO, recently visited Mission Bend Elementary School students in grades 3-5 to stress the importance of proper exercise and good nutrition in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This was TORO’s third visit to the school to promote his nutrition and fitness program, TORO’s Training Table, which is sponsored by the Houston Texans and BP America. Todd Welch, Physical Education teacher at Mission Bend, helped coordinate the visit.
