Seven “2012 Fund for Teachers” Fellows named in Fort Bend ISD
Seven Fort Bend ISD teachers are recipients of 2012 Fund for Teachers grant awards for professional development projects they designed and submitted for funding. Fund for Teachers awards fellowships for self-designed, professional growth opportunities for PreK to 12th grade teachers who recognize the value of inquiry, the power of knowledge, and their ability to make a difference. Since 2001, Fund for Teachers has awarded more than $15.9 million in grants, up to $5,000 for individuals or $10,000 for teams, to nearly 4,500 teachers. Earning individual grant awards were Naomi Brown and Lily Ann Graff-Archuleta. A team grant was presented to teachers Brooke Wilson, April Davis, Kelly Caldwell, Destiny Parker and Tawanna Evans.
Naomi Brown, GT Mentorship instructor, was awarded $5,000 to pursue her proposed fellowship project: Cycle from “Secret Annex” in Amsterdam to Germany’s Bergen Belsen Concentration camp documenting the legacy of Anne Frank and human rights awareness. Lily Ann Graff-Archuleta, a Foreign Language teacher at Hightower High School, received $4,177 to fund a four-week intensive course at the Université of Savoie in France to acquire a better understanding of life in a French-speaking country. A $10,000 team grant award (with each individual receiving $2,000) was presented to Burton Elementary School teachers Brooke Wilson, April Davis, Kelly Caldwell, Destiny Parker and Tawanna Evans. Their grant award will fund their proposed fellowship project: Visit Underground Railroad and east coast landmarks to broaden knowledge of the Black American experience and enhance the teaching of America’s story. All seven teachers will complete their projects this summer and then return to school in the fall to share their new-found knowledge with students and their peers through classroom activities and workshops.
