Gator Greeting

Travelers coming in from FM 762 to visit Brazos Bend State Park now have a new view of what has become a favorite destination for many. Standing sentry at the park’s main gate is a colorful, new, hand-made, 15-foot entrance sign, which features a life-sized 3-D image of the park’s most popular resident: the American Alligator.

The new sign, which replaced the park’s original marker that had been in place since the park opened in 1984, took more than two years to develop and acquire necessary funds. It was created by area artist Thor Holder of Signs by Tomorrow, who also donated much of his time for the project in order to keep costs low for the park system.

Pictured here (L to R) during the recent ribbon cutting of the new sign are: Steve Killian, superintendent of Brazos Bend State Park; Justin Rhodes, State Parks regional director; Walt Bailey, State Parks regional interpretive specialist; Richard Taylor, lead maintenance ranger at Brazos Bend State Park; Thor Holder, sign designer and artist of Signs By Tomorrow; and Offie Walker, president of the Brazos Bend State Park Volunteer Organization.
