Former Sugar Land Magazine Cutest Kid Contest Winner, and Fort Bend First Grader Skips recess, helps kids in need
Austin Elementary first grader, Aniyah K., opted out of recess today, deciding to pick up trash instead. After talking with her mom about the importance of giving back, Aniyah decided that skipping recess would be a great way to help her community. While her classmates ran around and reached for the sun while swinging, Aniyah served them. Smiling, Aniyah picked up trampled coke cans and empty Capri sun pouches. She even became frustrated when she’d picked up all the trash in one area - her heart was set on service and I was stunned at her determination.
Soon her classmates began took notice, asking “Are you picking up trash?” They, too, began pointing to pieces of trash and putting them in Aniyah’s bright pink “recycling rockstar” bag. It was great to watch these young world changers in action.
Although she’s making a difference and setting a great example at recess, Aniyah has her eyes on a greater dream. She wants to make bracelets she can sell and give 90% of her proceeds to charities that help orphans. Aniyah says “I want to help children that don’t have parents.” And that’s exactly what she’ll be doing as she creates bracelets over her Christmas break, supporting other young children in need. What a dream!
Aniyah is the first young girl to be highlighted in Project Passionista, a movement that empowers young girls to launch sustainable social enterprises. She embodies what a true passionista is, “a powerful young woman of purpose” and with each coke can picked up, she’s changing the world for the better. I’m humbled by her courage and dedication to helping others in need.
Aniyah was selected in the Fall of 2010 as the first runner up for the Sugar Land magazine Cutest Kid contest.
