Sugar Land Caring and Giving Project

Sugar Land, TX (November 26, 2013) ― Children at Primrose School of Sugar Land have spent the past month taking part in an annual Caring and Giving project which benefits the Houston Food Bank.

This program provides an opportunity for children to experience what it means to really help others. The children have spent time learning about proper nutrition, counting money and planning skills as they gathered their money, shopped grocery store ads and used their math skills to figure out how much they could buy with their money.

Stocking Stuffers Available for Holidays to Benefit Sugar Land Animal Services Pet Adoptions

Sugar Land, TX (November 25, 2013) ― Sugar Land Animal Services will help sell plush puppies at this year’s Christmas Tree Lighting event to support efforts that place dogs and cats with caring families.

Look for the shelter’s booth in Sugar Land Town Square on Dec. 5 from 5 - 8 p.m. to learn about adoptable animals, programs provided by Animal Services and Christmas specials, including the plush puppies.

The stocking stuffers are being sold throughout the holidays for $8.99 while supplies last. The promotion is a partnership with Raising Cane’s in Sugar Land, and all net proceeds will benefit the Sugar Land Animal Shelter. (more…)

Fort Bend GT Academy Students Selected to Present at Rice University Poetry Reading

Sugar Land, TX (November 22, 2013) – Thirteen Fort Bend ISD GT Academy students and one Academy alumni presented poetry during a recent poetry reading hosted by Rice University. The students were selected to take part in the event after submitting poetry they wrote based on their experience at the university’s “Words & Art” event, held at the Marshland by Gaia Exhibit, which featured floor to ceiling images depicting Houston’s urban change and development created by Baltimore street artist, Gaia.

Clements High School students benefit from $15.7 million Fort Bend Education Foundation grant funded by Schlumberger

Sugar Land, TX (November 20, 2013) ― Computer Science students at Clements High School are exploring the field of engineering by taking part in a pilot program made possible through a $15.7 million Fort Bend Education Foundation grant funded generously by Schlumberger.

The pilot program will provide educational programs to assist students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) labs. Included in the agreement are 25 Licenses for Petrel Software, which supports the study of petroleum, earth science and technology, as well as 25 Licenses for Ocean Kit Software that are geared toward science, technology and engineering. Schlumberger will also provide a new computer lab equipped with 25 computers.

Sugar Land Makes History with Largest Capital Improvement Project

Sugar Land, TX ­(November 15, 2013) – The City’s new $69 million surface water treatment plant near the intersection of Voss and Burney Road in the Gannoway Lake area is operational.

The plant has the distinction of the being the largest capital improvement project ever completed by the City.

Construction began in June 2011, and work included an administration/membrane building, chemical building, maintenance building, sludge dewatering building and various treatment units.

Residents who participated in a taste test on Nov. 8, 2008, returned to sample the final product after Sugar Land placed its new surface water treatment plant in service

Jazzercise Raises $2100 for Fort Bend County Women’s Center

Sugar Land, TX (November 8, 2013) Sugar Land Jazzercisers raised $2100 for Fort Bend County Women’s Center by staging a Beach Party benefit dance-fitness class. According to Jazzercise instructor and benefit organizer Gi Gi Horrell, Fort Bend County Women’s Center will use the donations for housing and assisting women and their children in need of emergency shelter and services after surviving domestic violence.

Thousands of Sugar Land Area Children to Receive Christmas Gifts

Sugar Land, Texas (November 8, 2013) - Santa’s Exchange is a joint community service project of The Exchange Club of Sugar Land, Sugar Land Rotary, The Exchange Club of Fort Bend and Toys for Tots. This year 5,000 children will receive Christmas gifts through the efforts of Community Service Clubs, businesses, churches, and schools that collect gifts for the children.

The Exchange Club of Sugar Land, Sugar Land Rotary, The Exchange Club of Fort Bend and Toys for Tots have partnered to provide toys for over 5,000 children this Christmas. Project coordinators pictured are: Kevin Barker, John Robson, Greg Oelfke, Ward Pendleton, Greg Pendley, Chip Smith, Farha Ahmed, Carolyn Tarver, and Katina Scott.

Parents in need are sent an invitation to visit Santa’s Exchange and “shop” for three new toys for each child. The kids have a chance to sit on Santa’s lap and “elves” entertain them with crafts and games. Traditionally over 1,000 volunteers from local community service clubs, high schools and churches assist on the day of the project.

Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital Welcomes Sugar Land’s Quadruplet Boys

Sugar Land, Texas (November 7, 2013) - On October 8, 2013, Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital joyfully celebrated the births of four healthy brothers to Sugar Land’s Aggour Family.

According to the National Organization of Mothers of Twins Club (NOMOTC), in 2011 there were a total of 3,953,590 births, 239 of which were quadruplet births. With so few quadruplet births, the Aggour identical triplets Deen, Kareem and Omar along with singleton Saif definitely beat the odds.

Thousands Attend Texian Market Days

Sugar Land, Texas (November 4, 2013) - Over 6,000 guests explored four historic sites and a plethora of activities at George Ranch Historical Park on Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26. The Park was bustling with excitement over the weekend as guests traveled from miles around to experience over 100 years of Texas history at the 30th Annual Texian Market Days, benefitting the Fort Bend County Museum Association’s educational programs and historic preservation efforts.
