Numerous state government officials and nonprofit representatives joined together last week to cut the ribbon and celebrate an exemplary partnership devoted to providing safe, effective and enjoyable therapeutic horseback riding to people with special needs. As stated on the certificate presented by State Senator Rodney Ellis’s office, the occasion merited “most sincere congratulations … to SIRE, Houston’s Therapeutic Riding Centers and Richmond State Supported Living Center on the occasion of celebrating their collaboration.”
SynchroStars members Elizabeth Oh and Abby Remmers recently participated in a National Team Skills competition and have both qualified to move on to the National Team Trials.
Suburban Sugar Land Women celebrate 23 years as a volunteer, non profit, 501C3, tax exempt, Fort Bend county, service organization who willingly, cheerfully, and generously provide year–round services and resources from infancy to adulthood since 1989 via five caring and compassionate service programs: Seniors Enrichment; Families Outreach; Infants thru Young Adults Development; Community Partners; and Community Involvement. Our mission is to design, implement, maintain, and evaluate wellness, community, educational, civic, and cultural programs that build confidence and expand knowledge and skills to succeed in school and life.
Braxton Wilks signed his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday, November 14th, to play Baseball at Kansas State University. Currently, Braxton plays Centerfield and is a left-handed pitcher at Episcopal High School. Braxton is a long-time Sugar Land resident (living over 14 years in Greatwood subdivision). He is an alum of Lamar Little League, with his 2007 12 year old Lamar National All-Star team making it to the State Championship game in Tyler.
The Fort Bend Optimist Club Sugar Land recently held its 30th Annual Fun Run/Walk. Over $19,000 was raised in sponsor support and Runner/Walker registrations. In addition, over $5,000 in merchandise and services were given away in a drawing at the end of the race.
On behalf of City Council, Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen welcomed Oyster Creek Manor to the community at the October building dedication for the assisted living and memory care facility. The building is the first phase in a project created by Wallace Bajjali Development Partners.
Penny Hays and Marian Wright, representing the Fort Bend Republican Women’s PAC, recently donated a number of books in honor of the Texas Federation of Republican Women in support of the Barbara Bush Literacy Library to George Memorial Library in Richmond.
Sugar Land’s new Online Town Hall is now focusing on feedback for the Sugar Land Police Department’s Crime Prevention Camera Program. Citizens are being asked: What are your thoughts and/or concerns regarding the implementation of the Crime Prevention Camera Program that can be considered during the creation of a policy to provide guidance for the use of the system?
At a recent presentation at the Fort Bend YMCA, it was announced that the YMCA would be a recipient of a $25,000 grant for the YMCA’s After School and Outreach Health Enhancement program. During the presentation, Maria Mendez, Mid-America West Regional Director for Aetna, presented YMCA Group Executive Director, Eric Schenkelberg, with a check for $25,000. “Aetna is proud to be supporting the YMCA in their endeavors to make this community’s youth healthier,” stated Maria Mendez of Aetna.
The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County was recently awarded a grant totaling $5,000 from NRG Energy. The funding that was received will go towards supporting the GED program for adult literacy.

Last month, the First Colony Middle School PALS and Cheerleaders organized a THINK PINK day to promote Breast Cancer Awareness. The Bobcats held a door decorating contest, a Powder Puff Football game, and collected donations from students and faculty that wore jeans in conjuncture with Lee National Denim Day.
Austin High School junior Walker Shores was selected to Congressman Pete Olson’s 2012-2013 Congressional Youth Advisory Council. Olson selected high school students from across his district to meet with community, business, government, and military leaders to discuss current issues and obtain the students’ input on major bills in Congress.
Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, in collaboration with Sugar Land and Fort Bend Exchange Clubs and the Sugar Land Rotary, provided free flu shots to community members who participated in Santa’s Gift Exchange. Fort Bend residents graciously brought new, unwrapped toys or clothing items to Methodist Sugar Land Hospital in exchange for a flu shot. The toys and clothing will benefit local children in the Fort Bend area during this holiday season.
