Seguin Elementary School Community focused on Fitness and Nutrition
The Seguin Elementary School community is focused on good health thanks to the “We Are Family” fitness and nutrition program introduced at the school this year. Designed by Sylvia Caycedo, school nurse, the program is funded through a School Nurse Childhood Obesity Prevention Education (SCOPE) grant from the National Association of School Nurses and the UnitedHealth Foundation.
The program was developed to promote lifelong wellness among students, families and staff by helping them develop healthy patterns of exercise and nutrition while encouraging participants to lead healthier lifestyles.
“We want this to be a community-wide health initiative that involves our staff members, students and their families, and school partners,” said Caycedo. “Our aim is to educate our school community about our students’ health status and promote the social responsibility of taking care of each other.”
Other objectives of the health and fitness program are to: promote fitness classes and after-school health activities; identify students who are considered at-risk for consequences of a high BMI reading; engage the school community in a weekly after-school Zumba fitness activity; and provide healthy snacks and nutritional education at school events.
“We are excited to be a recipient of the SCOPE grant, and are motivated and dedicated to improving the physical activity and nutritional education of our Seguin Elementary School Family,” added Caycedo.
