6 p.m.
In June, the University Branch Library’s “Monday Night Movies at the Library” series finds adventure. Each week’s movie night features a different film. The movie to be shown combines elements of action, comedy, and fantasy in portraying the life of a young self-absorbed, unemployed hipster who is coasting along in his carefree life until a shrill, unlikeable delivery girl named Ramona roller-blades into his world. Before he can go out with her, he must prove himself by defeating the league of seven ex-boyfriends who control her love life. This movie is rated PG-13. The “Monday Night Movies at the Library” are free and open to the public. For more information, call the branch library at 281-633-5100 or the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677.

The book to be discussed is Dai Sijie’s debut novel, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. This novel takes the reader behind the curtain that enveloped China during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and ‘70s, when Chairman Mao Zedong forced thousands of Chinese intellectuals to move to peasant villages for “re-education.” Two of these young men — the unnamed narrator and his friend Luo — chance upon a trunk of forbidden Western literature. In a struggle for survival, the men draw upon their ingenuity and knack for storytelling to find favor with the people of the village, retelling the plots of the stories from the trunk, and hoping to impress the beautiful young seamstress of the village, as well. Anyone interested in meeting with other readers who share the same love for literature and lively discussion is invited to attend. For more information, call the branch library at 281-633-5100 or the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677.

The digital age has opened up a vast assortment of applications, games, utilities, and much more that the electronic-savvy individual can explore, use, and enjoy. “Geocaching” is a digital game that has gained in popularity over the past 10 years. Fort Bend County Libraries will present a special program “Introduction to Geocaching.” Often described as a “game of high-tech hide-and-seek,” geocaching is an outdoor sporting activity in which participants use a GPS-enabled mobile device (including smartphones) and other navigational techniques to hide and search for containers, called “geocaches” or “caches,” anywhere in the world. The class is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and reservations are required. To register online at the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us), click on “Calendar,” select “University Branch,” and find the program. Participants may also register by calling the library at 281-633-5100, or by visiting the library.

Cast Theatrical Company
A drama by William Inge set in the early 1920s and in the home of the Flood family in a small Oklahoma town. Here we find Rubin, a traveling salesman for a harness firm, Cora his sensitive and lovely wife, Sonny their little boy and Reenie their teen-age daughter… The plot of Mr. Inge’s comedy drama is less one story than a series of short stories-the fight between a husband and wife; the fear of an overly shy young girl on going to a dance; the problems of an introverted little boy who feels that the whole world, including his family is against him; the outwardly peaceful and inwardly corroding marriage of Cora’s rowdy sister; the tragedy of a military school cadet whose mother has never provided him with a home and who suffers from the stigma of being a Jew in an alien community. What Mr. Inge is saying, with a power and tenderness of speech, is that there is dark at the top of everyone’s stairs, but that it can be dissipated by understanding, by tolerance, by compassion and by the brand of companionship that demands not conformity but love…For Mr. Inge has made in his play a statement of faith for all people who, if they accepted it, would live in a far better world. For more information, visit www.casttheatrical.com.
